I don’t think I am alone in thinking way, way too much about guild names, at least when I was first starting out in MMORPGs. Remember when everything was Something OF Something? And then when the one-word power names came into vogue during the WoW raiding era? I mean, I’m guilty of falling in with all those trends. I once named a guild “Hand of Justice” – it just doesn’t get more pretentious than that.

The guild names that actually make me pause nowadays are the ones that make me laugh. , , and will always stick in my mind better than anything super serious. I wouldn’t join a guild just for its name, but it’s definitely made me more likely to shed guild tradition and go with a catchy joke next time we need to roll up a team. Then again, maybe the jokes get old faster.
