How To Play 99 Nights in the Forest

99 Nights prides itself on no two playthroughs being the same, thanks to the randomly generated map, all despite the same common goal: survive 99 Nights and rescue all the children. Still, it’s tricky to know where to begin, so let’s start there.

Your First Day

Your first day is a long one, and you’ll notice you’re encased in a ring of grey walls. Your campfire expansions correspond to how much of the map is available to you. On this first day, I recommend the following:

  • Save the Saplings
    • Whilst gathering wood for your campfire, you’ll find saplings. Save these for later in a safe spot away from the camp. They’ll burn otherwise!
  • Kill Rabbits
    • Both for Morsels and their little feet. You’ll encounter the Pelt Trader on the second day, and he’ll request a rabbit’s foot first. In exchange, I recommend taking the Good Sack so you have more available space.
  • Make a Map
    • After igniting your campfire, use x3 wood to craft a Map. This allows you to use the ‘M’ key to view your explored areas and locate chests and structures.
  • First Night Freebie!
    • On your first night, the Deer will not attack you even if you leave the safety of your camp. Utilise this extra time to scavenge for loot. Try opening chests, gathering more food, wood, scrap, or killing wolves for their pelt.
  • Yellow Tower Huts
    • Inside these are free torches. Go in and take one. They’re great to use if you’re caught out after dark, as they stun the Deer.

Your First Few Days

Now you’re settled in, it’s time to upgrade your camp. Use your found fuel to upgrade the campfire to level 3 or 4. (Ideally 4). This unlocks more of the map, allowing you to explore more and find better items.

Next, stock the crafter with wood and scrap and upgrade it to level 2. The most important items within the second tier are the Sundial, which tells you how many minutes are left in the day/night cycle, farm plots for food, and rain storage.

The other items are useful too, but in the early game, you won’t have many materials, so I recommend prioritising what I suggested.

Hint: Save Fuel Canisters (or better fuel) for rainy days if you need a quick top-up. If your fire goes out, the deer is able to infiltrate your camp and attack.

Hint: If you find any Bandages or Medkits, keep them! They’re used to revive dead players (cannot be self-used if you die), or are used to heal HP on the go or during combat.

Fortifying

The wooden fences may look tempting, but they’re not as efficient as the saplings I suggested you save. Cultists, who routinely attack your camp every few days, can jump over the fences. However, if you line the perimeter of your camp with saplings and let them grow, you’ll create a fortified base that Cultists cannot raid so easily.

Hint: Later in the game, you’ll hopefully find Defence Blueprints! I recommend lining these up at an entrance to your base in a row of 3. You won’t take damage walking through them, but Cultists do! It helps whittle down their numbers when they attack.

Mid Game

At this point, you’ll hopefully be in the groove of the game and have a better understanding of its mechanics, craftables, and defences. So, you should be ready to rescue the first few children.

You can find the children by checking the board near your camp and checking how many metres away they are and in which direction. They also appear on the map if you look for the hilly mound with a barred entrance.

Each time you rescue a child, the days multiply by +1. So, after rescuing the first child, each day will increase by 2. This means you’re able to close in on surviving 99 Nights quicker, but also encounter dangers more frequently, such as environmental changes and Cultists. Beds also increase the day counter by +1.

End Game

Hopefully by now, you’re nearing 99 Nights and have rescued all, if not most, of the children. You’ll need to reach camp level 6 to find the final Koala Kid.

After 99 Nights pass, you can continue to play, or conclude the game (by voluntarily dying). If you want to keep playing, try organising and decorating your base, or finding all structures on your map and defeating them!
