GomExp seem to have picked up the partial crowdfunding approach that Valve introduced for The International 3 and which was something later employed by other Dota 2 tournament organizers. GomExp's Global Championship will thus have an increasing prize pool with every GSL ticket purchased.

The GSL Global Championship was announced a week ago when GomExp revealed their plans and scheduling for 2014. To be held in April, the event was advertised as an eight-man tournament featuring three winners and three runner-ups from each of the major regions and two players coming from online qualifiers.

At the time no prize pool was announced and today we learned why: GomExp's intention is not just to set some hard figure but also give StarCraft 2 fans to increase it by purchasing GSL yearly tickets, 10% of which will go into the prize pool. The starting prize pool was set at $10,000 and at the time of this article sits at $11,143, meaning GomExp have made almost $11,500 from selling tickets in one day.

The prize pool bar has a maximum of $30,000 and according to the official page, at $25,000 it will be promoted from a tier 3 to tier 2 WCS event, meaning more WCS points for everyone participating.

While this is a new way of funding a StarCraft 2 tournament, it has become an often occurrence in other eSport titles like Dota 2. The concept was brought up by Valve last year when the company gave Dota 2 fans the chance to purchase the so called "Compendiums" in order to get some cool stuff while at the same time increasing The International's prize pool. Said prize pool would eventually grow up from the base $1,600,000 to almost $2,875,000 or close to 80% increase.

The partial crowdfunding was later picked up by other Dota 2 organizers as well. In a recent editorial, GosuGamers crew member Tjernobylbarnet writes how "both MLG and StarLadder have been able to boost their prize pools with over 160% by having the common viewer help out every time he or she buys a bundle."

How well will this approach sit with SC2 and how far the Global Championship prize pool will be boosted remains to be seen. There's a lot of time between now and April and the StarCraft 2 community is given a chance to show that the +200% increase on a tournament's purse is not impossible.
