The first maps that will be presented to you are the newest Map of the Weeks. (4)Antartic Diary by Salazar Slytherin is a very well executed map. Has a standard layout with a special concept for the mineral onlies. It's set-up gives the player a choice to set up shop in the cove or near the middle. Preference or Strategic play is the option you giving with this sort of layout and it is executed nicely.
The most recent of MotW is (2)Kumba1.1 by tktkvroom. His first Map of the Week ever at BroodWarMaps.net. This map has a nicely executed set up and a nice expo layout. There is alot of variety terrain wise, which in turn brings many tactical elements into the gameplay.
A noteable competition was created for a special criteria at BroodWarMaps.net recently called Arctic Cityscape. Requirements were simple but execution turned to be harder than thought. The winner was Antares with (4)The Metal Age. It is a very nice island map. A very gosu layout with great sense of style and not to mention stuck very close to the requirements. A great job on this map.
The next maps are the Map of the Years. The four player map turned out to be a great one with (4)Nazca by DeA[Light formaly known as GRC-Deathlink. A great choice as this map has very great layout and all around style. This map is great for 2v2s, 1v1s, and ffas. Currently it has been thrown onto a poll at WGTour.com to be added to the mappool. You may want to check it out!
The next map is MotY(2); (2)Undying Lands by yours truly, NastyMarine. This map has also been added onto the poll at WGTour.com. Combined with an experimental main/nat setup and execution, it has earned a spot as MotY(2).
Last but not least, the most experimental map of 2006, is (4)Avatar by LostTampon. A relatively new mapper but has made a huge impact on the mapping community with his maps. This map is terrifically executed. With spells along the map to add more strategy than just a terrain features, this map was almost automatically made Experiment of the Year.
On a more interesting note, BroodWarMaps.net has just reached the 2,000 mark for maps in the database. They are very proud of the activity of mappers at the site and hope you can find all the best maps a player can ever want out of a mapping site.
