[s]event_wcg[/s]In the year 2005 the host city of the next WCG will be Singapore. This is not news and ICM had already given many hints that about the upcoming host city. Other potential candidate host cities have been Tapai, Milan, and Hannover.
What is news is that this next event may include the classic LAN party style of: BYOC. This may just be the largest “bring your own computer” event of its kind and the first time WCG goes this route.
WCG is already going to make a » BYOC event in San Fransico from October 6th to the 10th. The catch is that you need at least 15 US dollars to participate and you need to be over 18. I still suspect this event within the WCG mega event will be succesful despite these restrictions. I guess they are practicing for the Singapore event.
Let me quote an article from Straitstimes.asia1.com
in such a scenario, gamers will hook up with about 800 others to play computer games within the Local Area Network (LAN). The high-speed network will support them round the clock for the five days of the games. International Cyber Marketing (ICM), which is organizing the games, is holding this year's meet in San Francisco in October, the first time the grand final is staged outside South Korea. According to ICM president and chief executive Hank Jeong, "It's a new concept that's popular in Europe. We had to push and push for it in the US because the officials there were concerned about security."Interesting. Mr. Jeong in the quote is making reference to the BYOC in San Fransisco. It certainly brings down the hosting costs and adds more participation to the event because any gamer can join. They will still have to provide monitors and I wonder if you do not want to bring your computer if they will supply you with one?
There are many ramifications to this decision if it happens. It opens the doors for potential abuse. Also just think of this image: many young men, with red rimmed eyes and twitchy fingers, traveling from all over the world with strange metallic boxes. I can already imagine the Singapore airport authorities seing this as a nightmare. I really do not think it is a good idea.
Maybe they just want gamers to start buying Laptops..
