[s]starcraft[/s]Around 35% of WGTour plays with a map hack, some estimate more. Why do they not make BWScanner mandatory? Does it matter anyway? Fear not, now with BWScanner available in all of Battle.net and Stargate you can now have honest ladders.
Yesterday I had a long conversation with a Portugese gamer, now currently known as PaRaDiSe_oOv. He is an old school gamer, i.e. he has been playing the game since it came out. At one point he was a c2 player and was a member of Portugal B Team. Then one day he, like many others, became tempted by the dark forces that draw people away from the fog of war and he became a WGTour map hacker. He got caught and felt great shame and publicly admitted his hacking. In itself a rare event. Very few hackers actually even admit to hacking even when caught.
He now wears an “H” at WGTour, is fully converted to the fog of war and has been free of hacking since then. His personal life somewhat mirrors his Broodwar career and this young man is currently trying to reform many aspects of his life.
Well what is special about this “please die hacker”? What is special was his absolute remorse and honesty about the whole issue. Also what is even more special is his knowledge. While he used his map hack he refers that about 35% of WGTour gamers hack. You can imagine that if it is easy to spot a hacker when you play one, it is even more easy to do so if you're map hacking yourself. This percentage correlated roughly to what several others that analyze reps at WGT have informed me, whose names I will not disclose, as some of them are currently administrators there and wish to remain so.
Conclusion: if you succeed and climb the ranks of WGTour honestly, give yourself a pat in the back, you have managed to do so despite odds stacked up against you. And yes even very good gamers hack. Plenty of examples of that to go around, Koreans included.
WGTour has not sat idly during all this. They have continued to ban hackers over and over until a walloping 25% of the registrations have been banned. This leads me to wonder why they have not made BWScanner mandatory. They allow its use but it is not mandatory. In fact very few use it. What then is the difference between WGTour and old Battle.net ladder?
I say old because now you will start seeing more ladder games in Battle.net like in the old first two golden seasons, almost 7 years ago, of clean ladder games and the system working like it was supposed to when the whole Starcraft community fought their way up in a honest ladder in those pre-hack days. Why more ladder games now? What has changed? Well now BWscanner is available in every Gate. Even in neo-Gamei their launcher has turned out to be an effective tool against hack users. So now it is possible to have honest ladder games in Battle.net, Stargate, WGTour and neo-Gamei. That is of course if you find a willing opponent. Guess what? There are plenty.
In all our Starcraft history, non-hackers have never had it better. Please let's all rejoice this moment for who knows how long it will last. And let us bicker no more about who is better of Stargate, neo-Gamei or WGTour. Play anywhere you want, hey even battle.net ladder, because now we have the tools to enjoy an honest game against people other than your trusted friends.
