When you say Denmark and 2on2 the names Dahli and Pythonas come in mind. This is a story about two brothers who has developed into one of the best 2on2 teams in Europe, coming from a country with a relatively small gaming community. Dahli is the older brother, 23 years old, whose real name is Benjamin Nygård. The younger brother is Pythonas who is a 19-year-old and is named Jonas Nygård. The two brothers are very close to eachother, and they say that StarCraft is one of the reasons why.
- It makes a reason for me to call my younger brother daily, says Dahli when asked if the game has made them better friends.
- It is a reason which would not have been there without, he further says. Pyhonas adds that it has not really made them better friends, but that they surely talk more together in the daytime than they usually would.
So how did this journey start? Pythonas explains to GosuGamers that their oldest brother bought StarCraft, and that they more or less took over the game. Dahli also explains that he had a good friend back in 1999 who taught him to master Brood War. When they first started playing, Pythonas tells that he was amazed by the Battle.Net stats system – especially the stars. But nowadays he is more amazed by the game as a whole, how the game itself is very simple, but once you get beneath it, there is so much more.
- There are a lot of possibilities and finesses that makes it fun, for example the +1 armor upgrade versus lurkers - what a different upgrades does in the big picture, he says. Dahli is impressed with being able to have less units than your opponent and still win due to better timing and micro. And why did he stick to StarCraft this long?
- I became very good pretty fast, and as you say "more wants more" I got greedy and always wanted to be better, Dahli says and smiles. Nowadays he just plays because of his younger brother. When asked on goals, the two brothers answered different. Dahli said:
- I think we reached that goal alreday. Now, the only thing that drives me is that this is a way to spend time with my brother now that we don’t live together anymore. Dahli quite recently moved to Århus, which is 150 kilometers away from Pythonas. Pythonas, who whose goal is becoming the best 2on2 team with his brother.
When it comes to 1on1, they say both that they are not at all as good compared to them teaming up together.
- We cannot compete with players like KaaZ, SuKeR, Mondragon and the rest of the top players, but in 2on2 we are among the best, and compete with all teams no problem, Dahli says, while Pythonas agrees.
- I’m a newbie in 1on1 compared to my 2on2 skills, he says. Dahli adds that they are good 1on1 players, but in 2on2 they are better than good. Do they have the merits and records to back it up?
- There have not been any big 2on2 tournaments to win lately, Dahli says. Pythonas adds that besides nation wars they do not have that many achievements in the near past.
- If we look a few years back there were a lot more events such as "EU stars versus Poland" and "Kings of Dream hill". They both agree that there are too few 2on2 tournaments and leagues. Reason for that they think is because of the problems arranging it.
- You need four players to be ready for each game - look at the 1on1 tournaments; Even the big ones, forfeiting happens all the time, says Dahli.
So instead, we asked them about their scores in ladders, where they told about their PGTour statistics during the eigth season. They said they were ranked 6th and 9th with an 83% win rate.
- There are a lot of teams, some really good ones, a lot of average and worse, says Pythonas.
Dahli and Pythonas are also the reigning champions in the WGTour 2on2 ladder. The playoff were tough, but in the final they faced the Polish 2on2 duo uT)Zazu and MgZ)GohaN and won. Since then, the WGTour ladder has been down, and Dahli and Pythonas sit comfortably on their throne until a new season starts. What is the key to success for them playing 2on2?
- I guess, we're good at looking for possibilities in a map, says Pythonas. Dahli adds that it is because of them thinking alike during the game.
- We don’t question our ally’s decisions. We asked about their playing style, and they brought up a few stratgies, however:
- If you only had one kind of style you would be way to easy to defeat, says Dahli, while Pythonas says it works fine at Lost Temple and smiles.
- We practice hundreds of strategies, and uses as much in clanwars, nationwars and more - but yet again - you won’t win anything big with strats only - the teamplay is more important explains Dahli. The main idea behind forming a strategy should be to get an upperhand within the first 5-10 minutes, so that your teamplay will easily kill opponents late game. It is not to win the game based on the strategy - it happens a lot, but it is never the goal.
They are both members in Team Denmark, Dahli is the team manager as well. Them playing the 2on2 game is as clear as water, but what about 1on1?
- Nowadays we got a lack of solo players - then it’s required for us to play, instead of getting default losses, says Pythonas. Back when Smeagol, Avi and Nazarene were there for every nation war there was not the same need for players.
So basically the Danish team rely a lot on you in nation wars - since you could either win a nation war all by yourself (when it's five games), or lose it. How does that feel to shoulder the Danish team like that?
- I like the feeling of power, says Dahli and smiles big.
Pythonas further adds that it is of course a lot of pressure, but that:
- The past nation wars have not been as important. When they lost all their solo players, a 1on1 win is better than expected he explains. Then he further says that it is nice to win a nation war by themselves, but at the same time not as nice to lose it.
Dahli has been in Team Denmark since 2001, while Pythonas joined in 2002. Dahli says that it has always been that no one expects the Danish team to win anything, apart from the 2on2.
- If Denmark wins it is always a sensation. So our 2-4 score at World Cup was a very good result, says the national team manager. Denmark was placed in the group called Europe 1 with the teams Sweden, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania. They defeated Bulgaria and Slovakia, and were very close in beating Sweden as well. This was not enough to qualify, however with the deciding match in the nation war against Sweden was the 2on2 match, they thought they actually had a chance to make it to the playoffs.
- We expected to end up with 0-4 in the 1on1 games and then all of a sudden the score was 2-2 thanks to Pythonas and ABCTerran, defeating Habit and KaaZ. The 2on2 stood between Dahli and Pythonas against the Swedish duo KaaZ and DaZe. Match ended 2-1 in favour for Sweden, and Denmark’s chances of qualifying was over. They knew that if they managed to win against Sweden the Czech Republic were to be a tough nut to crack. But they lost, and therefore forfeited two of the games versus the Czechs.
Asking them which team that will win World Cup, Dahli says Russia or Ukraine, while Pythonas believes in Poland.
- If the formation is 4 solo games and a 2on2 game Russia might have a pretty good shot at it, though Poland has much more good players compared to Russia and Ukraine, says Pythonas.
The two brothers are both members of two teams – DoA and impuLsive.inc. DoA is a German sponsored team, while puLs is more of thier home squad.
- We have roots in puLs, so we could not leave team when DoA offered us a spot in their roster says Dahli, and Pythonas adds that they have no plans on leaving neither of the teams. An interesting project they were involved in was the Swedish site Gamingeye’s very own StarCraft clan called clan eye. GosuGamers asked the two what ever happened to it.
- I don’t know what exactly happened, but eye.friend went inactive all of a sudden. Without any kind of leadership the team died a couple of weeks later says Pythonas. Dahli adds:
- All players were ready to make a good nordic team, but admins let us down. Nowadays, there are not many all-Nordic teams. There have been rumours that Dahli and Pythonas was on their way of joining the team called Clan BroodWar, managed by BW-HadeS, and with members such as Mireille, ZpuX and Fox.
- We have been invited couple of times, yes. But we have never accepted the invites, says Dahli. Pythonas says that they went back to their roots – aP(, today known as puLs.
GosuGamers asked if the part of Dahli being the bigger brother had any affect in their in-game style.
- If you asked me that question two years ago I would have said that I was the brain behind the games - nowadays Pythonas is thinking just as creative, so now we both fill in that role, says Dahli. They both don’t play that much nowadays, and if they do they play with eachother.
We asked if they were going to DreamHack this summer, but they said no.
- If we can find any to sponsor it we might - we are both studying so we have low economy, and a trip to Sweden is actually pretty expensive, he says. The last topic we brought up was gaming in Denmark. The StarCraft community in Denmark is not particularily big. Dahli can’t really find a reason for that, other than the fact they have few players. Dahli says that the three players who should be fairly known from Denmark are Dahli, his brother Pythonas and Smeagol, now playing under the nickname ABCTerran. GosuGamers hopes that we will see more of the two brothers Dahli and Pythonas in the future.
