First of all, please introduce yourself; name, age, location and occupation.
I'm David Schaack, a 16 years old pupil from Germany.

You are most famous for your legendary Brood Warmovies, but how did it all start? When did you start playing Brood War?
I started playing broodwar one and a half year ago, when Warcraft3 began to get boring. I was very impressed by the gameplay of broodwar and it was much fun to play it.

Which is/was your race?
When I started, I played mostly Terran. But at the moment I play Random or Protoss. It depends on my enemy.

Do you have any special match-up you like most or any match-up you really hate?
I really like Protoss vs Zerg. It's hard, but I'm a bad player anyway and because of this it doesn't matter if it's a hard match-up or not. The only thing witch counts is the fun. I don't like playing Terran vs Zerg because I always mess up my marine controll which often ends up in loosing my complete army.

I decided to make a movie as soon as I started playing Brood War.

When did you decide to make movies about Brood War?
Actually I decided to make a movie as soon as I started playing Brood War. I made some Counterstrike/Warcraft 3 Movies/Trailers before and when I started playing bw, I recogniced that on the one hand there aren't many movies and on the other hand it's a great game to make movies about.

Can you remember on your first movie you made about Brood War which has been published somewhere?
It was the WCG2004 Movie. I made a short trailer and I saw, that many people liked it. But when the movie came out I was totally suprised by the reaction. So many people downloaded it and I got emails and other messages with good feedback. I had never thought, that the it could become such a popular movie.

About how long did it take you to create that WCG2004 movie?
It's not easy to answer this question. But I think it took me about 40 hours because I had to watch all the WCG replays.

Do you create your movies alone or do you get help by other people with similar skills in making movies?
I do the editing alone. But sometimes I got help from Bert and Betrayal, who looked through masses of replays to find good scenes. I actually can't imagine to work together with another moviemaker, because everyone has his own style. (except gg-mazor, who I stole some ideas from ^^) But I try to help every moviemaker who asks me questions.

Where do you get your impressions for the background music from ? Do you listen a song somewhere and think: "Oh, that's nice for a movie!" or do you watch the movie and search for a song which fits perfect in it?
Almost every music I use in my movies is music I really like. Since I started making movies I think about EVERY song I hear, if I could use it in a movie. Sometimes I get impressions from other movies, sometimes other people give me ideas and sometimes I'm simply listening to music in my playlist and then I think: "Wow, that's a cool song for a movie." The only movie which was completely different in this aspect was the S2 Movie. The UT OST was chosen by S2, not by me.

Do you think, that your skill in making movies has become better with every movie you make about Brood War?
Indeed. I don't know if you can notice it when you watch my movies. But I become much more familiar with the programs with every movie I make. When I think about the WCG2004 Movie I wonder about how few thinks I knew about making movies.

There are probably some people out there who try to make movies too. Which programs are good for making movies? Which programs do you use ?
The best solution for recording the scenes is Camtasia. It's easy to use. You can find a tutorial about it on www.exvods.de.vu ("HowTo"). I myself use Sony Vegasvideo to do the editing. But I also can recommend Adobe Premiere or Ulead Media Studio. The compression should be done with the XVid Codec and VirtualDub, which is freeware.

Do you get any support with money or programs from somewhere?
I got money from S2 for the clanmovie. For all my other movies I did not get any money. Most of the programs are freeware. Sony Vegas Video is an expensive tool, but you can download a tryout version and test it.

“My parents do know about it and I think the are proud about it, especially since my PIP2002/2003 movie was broadcasted in german television.

Do your parents know about your skills in making movies? If they do, what do they think about it?
Intresting question. My parents do know about it and I think the are proud about it, especially since my PIP2002/2003 movie was broadcasted in german television. Of course they wouldn't be too happy if I would spend all my freetime in front of the PC. ;)

Did you ever had some argueing with them, any conflicts because of school vs. making movies, which takes a lot of time?
I had some argueing with them before I started making movies, when I was younger. I think many of the younger gamers know that. But now it's my decision how much time I spend in front of the PC. At least as long as my marks are ok. ;)

I think making movies is one of your hobbies, what are your other hobbies?
Besides gaming I of course like to meet friends, do some sports (especially Street-Hockey) or read a good book. A few weeks ago I started to play poker/online poker just for fun and it's very nice.

What is your favourite book? Do you like Herr der Ringe (Lord of the rings) books, which is currently on german television?
Yes, I really like Lord of the Rings. I also like the films and I think I'm going to watch it later. ^^ I'm a big fan of the fantasy gerne. I recently finished reading "The Elves", which is one of the best fantasy books I ever read. I can't really say which book I like most.

Do you have any movie maker you really like or which is something like an idol for you? Both in virtual life and in real life, if you have one?
In virtual life I really like Mazor, DrKennedy (who will release a VERY nice movie soon, I saw some previews), MasterT and Kala. MasterT was a WC3 moviemaker and is now a CS moviemaker. Kala is a very well known CS moviemaker. In real life I think Quentin Tarantino is definitely the best director ever.

Do you have any favourite movie in reallife?
Hard to answer. I think Kill Bill 1+2, The Matrix 1, LotR 1-3 and American Beauty are very very good movies. I also like the old StarWars movies...

Whats your favourite music you are listening too ? Any bands etc.?
Mainly Metal. Freedom Call, Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Children of Bodom, Equilibrium...many metal genres. But I also listen to Rock and Film Soundtracks (Hans Zimmer, John Williams...) often. I think I like almost every music except HipHop.

I see, Turis Fratyr is a such amazing album. Equilibrium improved even more. Lets get back a bit to broodwar. Do you have any special player you like most?
Yes, Turis Fratyr is very good. ;) I like Fisheye's style very much. From Korea I still like oldschool Boxer. ^^

X vs. YThe answers in bold are what [pG]dyo prefers.
Yellow vs. Boxer

Summer vs. Winter

McDonalds vs. Burger King

Beer vs. Water
Future and the endOkay, those are my questions. It is almost over, what are your plans for future, both in virtual life and in real life?
In virtual life I want do continue doing Brood War movies and I want to improve my moviemaking skills. I also want to come to any big LAN and meet some people I only know from the internet. In real life I want to enjoy the summer after this long winter. ^^ I think I will finish school in 3 years but I actually don't know what I will do then. ^^

Alright, thanks a lot for your time. GosuGamers wishes you the best in the future, great fun and skill in making movies and a good time this summer! Ending question: How is the movie about ash.swift going, who just won the tournament? When will it be released?

Thank you too. Best wishes for your great Brood War page and a good time this summer to you too. :) I just started looking through some replays. I think it will be released in 2-3 weeks. But the best answer is of course: When it's done. ^^
