Cris, pro player and streamer, played the perfect Chromie game and still lost.

We all know you can't carry in Heroes, but that can't be "actually" true, right? After watching this game played by Diamond Skin Cris, it's hard to argue otherwise.
Back when Chromie was first revealed, I had a feeling Christoph 'Cris' Gowitzke enjoyed the hero. Now playing for HGC EU qualified team Diamond Skin and streaming regularly his love of Chromie hasn't changed. Anyone familiar with his stream knows his penchant for the hero and, lately, he has been exclusively streaming Chromie games on an alternate account he is grinding to GM with named Hyuna.
But that isn't what we are here to talk about. I want to tell a story about one game in particular that has made me lose all hope in any one players ability to carry a game of Heroes of the Storm. After watching this game from beginning to end, I've concluded that there are some games where you are destined to lose no matter what you do. Some games are impossible to win, no matter how majestic and next level your play is.
Here we go again!
I'd love to show you the video, but the Twitch past broadcast is only available to subscribers. So for now, let the stat screen tell the story:
- Cris did 139,446 damage with Chromie.
- He was responsible for 15 killing blows, the large majority being solo kills.
- He was the only player to not die once. Event against Kerrigan, Muradin, and Artanis.
- While doing all of this, he somehow managed to contribute 17,981 XP for his team.
Cris was making correct decisions and leading his team the entire game. No one was peeling for him. The Illidan was very ineffective and laughably was the biggest risk to Cris, as he kept spreading Chain Bombs, coming extremely close to killing Chromie multiple times.
I can't overstress how next-level the Chromie play in this game was. Routinely winning 2 vs. 1 skirmishes, surviving Kerrigan and Muradin dives multiple times, sniping off the enemy support nearly every team fight. It was what everyone dreams their Chromie ally would do.
But none of it mattered. His team was too heavy.
And of course, Cris lamented all of this as it was happening. He immediately identified how weak their draft was and how his allies style of play was making it impossible to win. Normally, it's hard to get behind this type of "It's not me, it's my team" mentality, but this was one of the rare cases where I actually think Cris played perfectly.
I mean, have you even seen someone ever been responsible for a whopping 46% of a teams damage?
Of course, Kael'Thas get's MVP despite this.
Good night...
Cris was a great sport about the loss, despite it being infinitely frustrating as a viewer to watch such an injustice take place. To see him lose rank after demonstrating such an amazing game felt wrong. It was also discouraging as a player trying my hardest to climb out of Diamond and into Master.
I concede immediately that I am not as good as Cris and the level of play he displayed with Chromie is something I'll probably never achieve. So what are my chances of realistically improving my game and seeing that reflected in my ranking? If Cris can't carry heavy teammates, what chance do I have?
How much of my Hero league success is dependent on 4 other strangers who, depending on their whim, might make it impossible for me to win no matter how hard I try? The only way I figure I can keep my sanity while playing Hero League is to care less about the win and more about just having fun. That way, even if my win rate is less about my performance and more about the teammates I am given, at least I will enjoy the Hero I am playing.
Then again, maybe this exact line of thought that caused the Illidan paired with Cris to pick another Melee assassin despite the team desperately needing wave clear and more ranged damage.
