After the recent news of popular streamer Amaz signing with Team NRG, Archon’s co-owners have clarified the situation with the once prominent Hearthstone team.

Together with Tempo Storm, Team Archon was one of the first major brands born within the Hearthstone community. Led by prolific streamer and gaming personality Jason “Amaz” Chan, the organization was founded in November 2014 just in time for the World Championship of that year, a tournament won by Archon’s own James “Firebat” Kostesich.

Over the years, Archon’s name was connected not just with hosting some of the biggest names of the scene, including Jon “Orange” Westberg, Sebastian “Xixo” Bentert, Ryan “Purple” Root and most recently 2016 Winter Champion Will “Amnesiac” Barton but also organizing tournaments to varying levels of success.

One of those endeavors came to be known as Archon Team League Championship – or ATLC for short: A massive, first of its kind $250,000 team league, at the time the biggest prize pool outside the World Championship and certainly the largest for any Hearthstone team league. As the event came to a end in September 2015, it left the team of Nihilum (now G2 Esports) as champions and the community asking when the next edition will happen.

With Archon’s eventual transition away from competitive gaming and more towards a streaming profile, it sounded like ATLC 2 was never to be run, but team co-owner Brent “Backspace” Kaskel assured fans that, despite lacking any planned timeline, ATLC 2 “is definitely happening”.

Depending on the scale and execution of a potential sequel, ATLC 2 could not come soon enough, considering the limited opportunities Hearthstone orgs have to compete as a full team. The need for team leagues has been particularly pushed and advocated by Hearthstone industry insiders, pointing out how providing regular exposure for organizations and their sponsors might just be the first step towards inciting them to invest in competitive HS.

Archon’s founder Amaz has also taken to social media to shed light on his move from his own organization to Team NRG. Addressing questions from his Twitch channel – the bigger ones of which are summarized in a reddit thread here – Amaz confirms that they are “stopping Archon for a bit”, that their last remaining competitive player in Amnesiac is a free agent and that he will dedicate himself to streaming and tournament organization moving forward.

Amaz also dropped hints towards when ATLC 2 could possibly happen and the answer is not optimistic.

“It would be very cool if ATLC 2 happened, for example, that would be very cool, but since we can't do that since there's not enough money on the environment right now, I'm doing something else such as Amaz VS World,” says Amaz.
