We will get a first look at The Witcher 3’s new expansion at Gamescom in August.

The next major expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, officially titled ‘Songs of the Past’, will receive a “first look” next month at the annual Gamescom event, CD Projekt announced.

The Songs of the Past expansion is one of the biggest surprises of the year, having been revealed last May with a 2027 release window attached. Many were not expecting a decade-old game to receive a major expansion, especially since its first two expansions were released shortly after the game launched in 2015 with Hearts of Stone (2015) and Blood and Wine (2016).

That said, we will find out what it has in store when the reveal arrives during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, taking place on 25 August at 2:00 PM ET/11:00 AM PT/2:00 AM (+1 day) SGT.

CD Projekt is developing the full-fledged expansion for The Witcher 3, Songs of the Past, in partnership with Fool’s Theory. It is scheduled to release in 2027 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

The expansion will once again let players assume the role of Geralt of Rivia for a brand-new adventure, 12 years after the third instalment's release. While this is the extent of what CD Projekt has revealed so far, many anticipate the expansion to serve as a narrative bridge to the upcoming The Witcher 4, where Ciri will become the new protagonist. She is Geralt’s adopted daughter who was central to The Witcher 3’s storyline. It is also said that Songs of the Past will be similar in scale to the Blood and Wine expansion, which would put its size at around 13–15 GB.

The Songs of the Past expansion is expected to release before The Witcher 4, which still does not have a confirmed release date, though CD Projekt has confirmed that it will not launch before 2027.

With no details revealed yet, fans can look forward to the annual Gamescom Opening Night Live, where more information about The Witcher 3’s new expansion is confirmed to be unveiled.
