Guide: Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Cape Bonavista chests, secrets, and treasure maps
Here's a detailed walkthrough so you can thoroughly get Cape Bonavista to 100% completion.
Cape Bonavista may be where Edward Kenway’s adventure begins in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, but there is much more to the island than what you can explore during your first visit.
This is where Edward first encounters and pursues Duncan Walpole, an Assassin he eventually kills before stealing his identity. Later, he rescues the beloved side character Stede Bonnet from a group of Spanish soldiers, who allows him to take the wheel of the Schooner and bring them to Havana, where Edward’s big adventure begins.
While it might feel like there is not much to do around the area at first, there is a lot more to discover later, when you can return with the Jackdaw once you have reached the “Now Hiring” quest.
Here's everything you can pick up at Cape Bonavista.Once you get the Jackdaw, Edward can return to Cape Bonavista and find everything there is on the island, including treasure chests, a Treasure Map, a Mayan Stele, animals to hunt and a few other secrets along the way. If you want to find everything and complete Cape Bonavista, we’ve got you covered. Here’s everything you can find on the island.
Just a quick reminder: if the collectible or item you are following is visible on the map, you can mark its icon to make it easier to find as you explore.

How to find all chests, letters, and secrets in Cape Bonavista
Overall, there are three chests in Cape Bonavista, excluding the treasure you get from the Treasure Map, which we will get to later. The first one is an easy find, as it is used as part of the tutorial. At the beginning of the game, Edward finds a ship that will take him to Havana by climbing through a branch that leads to the first viewpoint in the game.
From there, if you choose to take a Leap of Faith into the water, you will be prompted to observe your surroundings. This will lead you to your first-ever chest.
The next chest is not quite as straightforward. Once you reach the “Now Hiring” quest, you can travel back to more locations with the Jackdaw and access the other viewpoints. Use the Cape Bonavista viewpoint to return, but after that, make sure to go back to the map and fast travel to the Jackdaw, as this starting point makes it easier to explore the rest of the island.
The mangrove entrance to Cape Bonavista from the Jackdaw. The Jackdaw will be facing a jagged opening between the islands filled with mangroves. Swim your way through until you reach the first bit of wreckage that you can parkour across to reach land. Once you get there, you will find the next chest immediately to your left.
On the opposite side of that area, after you cross through more wreckage and loot, there will be a small patch of sand with a few barrels and crates, as well as the remains of a small bonfire. A few steps away, you will find some skeletons with a Letter in a Bottle, which contains one of Duncan Walpole’s men's account of the Observatory.
The way to the Letter in a Bottle. From there, head towards the wreckage closest to the waterfall, where you can climb to the next part of Cape Bonavista. Be careful from here because there is a Jaguar slinking about and minding its own business, but if it sees you, it will attack. Assassinating it may prove difficult, so you can either quietly make your way through the bushes or face it head-on.
A fair warning: its bite deals pretty heavy damage, so you might want to run your way up top and shoot it instead for survival's sake. This also allows you to discover and tick off the Jaguar discovery in Cape Bonavista.
Warning! The Jaguar in Cape Bonavista can kill you in two bites. You can then make your way to the next viewpoint by climbing towards the upper-right scaffolding, which I recommend doing so that fast travelling around the area is easier. Follow the path through the stack of dried coconut leaves and up the scaffolding until you reach the viewpoint.
The next chest is located at coordinates 161,583, close to the Mayan Stele, and the Treasure Map at 161,585. To get there, make your way down from the viewpoint towards the area close to where the Jaguar is located. Instead of making your way all the way down, however, parkour across the branches until you reach the next area. You will see a hut ahead, with the Treasure Map nearby.
As you jump to the next platform, Edward will start making comments about the dead bodies lying around with loot left behind. You can also choose to kill the Howler Monkeys nearby for map completion (and crafting materials), or leave them alone and continue exploring.
How to find the Cape Bonavista Treasure Map and buried treasure
From here, you should make your way towards the hut and, from the roof, you will find a ramp beyond the next platform. Get all the loot there and turn right, following the marker for the Treasure Map.
Once you climb the ledge, you will see a cave ahead with a human skeleton lying at the entrance. This is where you can get the Cape Bonavista Treasure Map. Fortunately, the treasure shown on the map can also be found in Cape Bonavista, but we’ll get back to that later.
Loation of the Treasure Map in Cape Bonavista.Just beyond the cave is the Mayan Stele, which you can easily solve. Then comes the tricky part: reaching the next chest. You will have to climb through the waterfall to get to it, but before that, do not forget to collect the data file for the Animus to your left before heading back to the waterfall.
This waterfall is quite tricky and has secrets of its own.in Cape Bonavista. To reach the chest, find a small ledge on the left and make sure you jump, rather than parkour, towards the small protruding ledge that is nearly obscured by the waterfall. You will then have to find the right angle to parkour your way up to the next ledge, where you will find the opening to a cave. Take a Leap of Faith into the pile of dried palm leaves, and just behind it is the chest.
Cave entrance to the buried treasure in Cape Bonavista. Finally, we get to the Cape Bonavista treasure from the Treasure Map, which is found at 146, 587. You can fast travel to the first viewpoint you jumped from at the beginning of the game and take a Leap of Faith into the water. Once you get back on land, turn right until you find the entrance to a cave with some stalagmites. There, you will find a turtle and some flowers marking the spot where the treasure is buried. This buried treasure contains 1,500 reales.
In the pool ahead lies the buried treasure in Cape Bonavista.Following this guide will help you complete everything in Cape Bonavista. Hope this helps!
