Sophie Turner cast as Lara Croft in Amazon’s live-action Tomb Raider series

The Tomb Raider series is moving forward with Sophie Turner as Lara Croft.
Amazon’s long-rumoured Tomb Raider television series is officially moving forward, with Sophie Turner confirmed to take on the role of Lara Croft. The live-action adaptation, based on the legendary video game franchise, is scheduled to begin filming on 19 January, 2026.
The announcement follows months of uncertainty surrounding the project. Back in April, industry reports suggested that the series had been scrapped after significant investment with little progress to show. The latest confirmation not only signals the revival of the series but also secures one of its most crucial elements: the casting of a new Lara Croft.
Turner, best known for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, had been linked to the role since 2024, when she was named as a frontrunner alongside Lucy Boynton, known for her role as Mary Austin in Bohemian Rhapsody. Stepping into the shoes of a character previously portrayed on film by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, Turner acknowledged the challenge of bringing Croft to life for a new generation.
“I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft,” Turner said in a press release first reported by PC Gamer. “She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many, and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands.”
Turner also marked the announcement on her Instagram Stories, where she shared Amazon MGM Studios’ official confirmation of her casting. In the post, the 29-year-old conveyed her excitement and relief, writing: “Finally I can talk about this ahhhh.”
Phoebe Waller-Bridge leads the Tomb Raider creative team
The upcoming Amazon Tomb Raider series will be guided by an experienced creative team. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, known for her work on Fleabag, will serve as co-showrunner alongside Chag Hodge. Jonathan van Tulleken is attached as director and executive producer.
Waller-Bridge praised Turner’s casting, calling her “formidable,” and said the team is deeply passionate about honouring the character’s legacy while delivering new adventures. Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, added: “We are thrilled to have the wonderfully talented Sophie Turner bring this character to life who is defined by her courage, strength, and unshakable resolve. Led by the brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge, this series will honour the beloved Tomb Raider legacy while delivering fresh adventures to fans worldwide.”
With production due to start in January 2026, Amazon’s Tomb Raider series promises to bring one of gaming’s most enduring icons back into the spotlight with Sophie Turner as its iconic female protagonist.
