The upcoming set Edge of Eternities brings space opera into Magic: The Gathering lore for the first time!

Magic: The Gathering is truly embracing space fantasy with its latest in-universe Standard set Edge of Eternities, which releases on 1 August, 2025.

Set in the Edge, which exists outside of the known Multiverse in Magic: The Gathering, the main story follows a new character Sami and his ragtag crew, as different factions vie for power among the five planets orbiting around the collapsed sun (i.e. blackhole) Sothera. The Sothera solar system is now also home to the villain Tezzeret, but how and why is he there?

The upcoming set will answer this question in the first installation of a new story arc in Magic: The Gathering’s lore, and at the same time introduce new keywords, as well as mechanics to the card game.

Spacecraft, Station, and Planet

The first new keyword introduced in the game is SpacecraftSpacecraft is a new artifact subtype, and most of them can turn into an artifact creature with another new keyword Station

Station is a new activated ability found on Spacecraft (and other permanentsthat can only be activated as a sorcery on your turn, and it requires you tapping an untapped creature to give the particular Spacecraft a charge counter equal to the creature’s power.

Two new Spacecrafts, but they do different things with charge counters.

One such example of a Spacecraft which can turn into an artifact creature is Extinguisher Battleship. When Extinguisher Battleship has five or more charge counters, it becomes a 10/10 artifact creature with flying and trample.

Not all Spacecrafts can turn into artifact creatures with the new ability Station. The Eternity Elevator, for example, remains as an artifact with 20 or more charge counters, but gains a new (elevated!) ability to add X mana of any colour, where X is the number of charge counters on The Eternity Elevator.

This Spacecraft can quite literally zap anything off the board with 10 or more charge counters.

With the release of Edge of Eternities, Wizards of the Coast has also made a new ruling: legendary Vehicles and Spacecrafts can now be Commanders! So, if you are interested in building a 100 card singleton Commander deck around the new legendary Spacecraft Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought, you can now do so! Just remember that if you do, you will still need to respect colour identity. Hence, a Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought Commander deck will have to be a colourless one.

Budget Gaea's Cradle and Tolarian Academy right here.

The next new keyword to appear is Planet. Planet is a new nonbasic land type with no additional functionality, but the new Planets in the set have the ability Spacecraft to give the Planets some extra abilities.

Warp

The fourth new keyword is WarpWarp is an alternate cost, which allows players to cast some permanents (mostly creatures) from their hand by paying their Warp cost. When they do, the permanent will be exiled at the beginning of the next end step, and players can then cast it from exile on a later turn by paying its normal cost.

More value for control decks.

Creatures in Edge of Eternities with Warp have enter the battlefield effects, like Quantum Riddler, which allows players to draw at least one additional card (or potentially more) in their turn with just one blue and one generic mana.

Creatures cast with Warp are still affected by summoning sickness unless they have haste, so do take note that they will not be able to attack in the same turn. Having said that, a lot of the enter the battlefield effects are useful enough that players will be inclined to cast permanents with Warp in earlier turns.

Void and Lander tokens

The fifth new keyword to appear in Edge of Eternities is Void. Void is largely a triggered ability which improves certain cards if a nonland permanent left the battlefield this turn, or a spell was warped this turn.

A potential Lightning Bolt in Standard?

Void can appear on both permanents and non-permanent spells, and Void can either be an alternate effect or an additional effect depending on the spell.

In the case of Plasma Bolt, Void is now an alternate effect dealing three damage to any target, instead of the usual two, if the conditions are met.

Additional mana ramp in Standard.

The last new keyword to appear in this set is Lander tokenLander tokens are new predefined token types, and they are colourless artifact tokens with an activated ability to search for a basic land and put it onto the battlefield tapped. These tokens will be an additional boon for all the Chocobo landfall decks getting popular in the current Standard constructed meta.

These Chocobos can get out of hand quite easily.

Standard Rotation

With the release of Edge of Eternities, the following sets will rotate out of the Standard format on 29 July: Dominaria United, The Brothers' War, Phyrexia: All Will Be One, March of the Machine, and March of the Machine: Aftermath.

This means that cards from the sets listed above will not be legal in Standard, unless they get reprinted in future sets. With that said, the Standard format will now consist of the last two years of Standard sets (starting from Wilds of Eldraine), as well as the new Edge of Eternities which marks the first set of the coming Magic: The Gathering year (yes, the year starts from July/August).

Pre-release for Edge of Eternities begins on 25 July.
