Overwatch 2’s game director Aaron Keller has hinted that more story content is coming.

Overwatch 2’s game director Aaron Keller has hinted that the hero shooter’s story content might be coming back, following the cancellation of its planned PvE missions. During a recent Twitch stream with Jay3, he noted that Overwatch 2’s story content needs to “come back” for the game to truly be “firing on all cylinders.”

New Overwatch 2 story content might be in the works

Fans of Blizzard Entertainment’s hero shooter Overwatch 2 might have more story content to look forward to in the near future. Game director Aaron Keller recently sat in on a Twitch stream with Overwatch 2 content creator Jay3 and Hazard voice actor Conor McLeod to discuss the current state of the game, including its lack of new story content.

During the stream, he noted that players online feel “like Overwatch has dropped the ball when it comes to story and lore [...] You kinda see that. We used to put a few more of the big animated shorts out than we do nowadays.”

As fans of the game know very well by now, Overwatch and its later sequel released multiple animated cinematic shorts from their inception, fleshing out the lore of its universe and characters. Overwatch 2 was also set to launch with unique PvE story and hero missions featuring the game’s colourful cast, pushing its story forward even further.

The PvE story missions were eventually axed following the delayed release of a three-mission paid DLC pack, and the hero missions never made it into the actual game. Blizzard has opted to focus on Overwatch 2’s multiplayer facets instead, including the all-new Stadium game mode, which finally adds a third-person perspective to the shooter.

Keller touched on this in the stream, saying:

“To speak frankly about it, we did have a big plan to go after story in the game. That was the PvE side of it with the campaign and everything like that. That didn’t work out. So, it was kind of a bit of a reset moment for us when that happened, and we would like to get back to it. I think one of the best parts of Overwatch is the universe and the characters that are there. That’s definitely a goal of ours to get back to it. There’s been a bit of a step backwards that we had to take in order for us to be able to start moving forward on it again.”

Keller affirmed that “I think for us to say that Overwatch 2 is firing on all cylinders, we need to have some of that come back,” hinting that some of this new story content may already be in the works.
