Assassin’s Creed IV voice actor teases possible Black Flag remake

Not all legends are lost to the sea. A cryptic comment from Edward Kenway’s voice actor sparks talk of an old tale ready to be told again.
Fans of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag are abuzz after Matt Ryan, the voice actor behind Edward Kenway, appeared to hint at a potential return to the high seas. In a short clip that surfaced on TikTok and X on 29–30 June, Ryan’s remarks have reignited speculation around the long-rumoured remake of the 2013 pirate-themed instalment of Assassin’s Creed.
In the clip, Matt Ryan appeared to tease a possible return to the fan-favourite title. The clip showed Ryan speaking with a fan while signing merchandise, during which he made a series of suggestive remarks.
“Have you beaten the [Black Flag]?” Ryan asked. When the fan replied that they had, though not recently, he responded: “Well, you might have to beat it again...” He then gave a knowing nod and smile.
The fan followed up with: “Is this true? I gotta run through all of them again,” to which Ryan replied: “Well, especially this one. There’s a reason I say that, but I can’t say anything.”
The exchange has led many to believe Ryan is referencing the long-rumoured Black Flag remake, which has yet to be officially confirmed by Ubisoft.
Black Flag remake rumours continue to build
The comments have fuelled widespread speculation that Ryan is teasing the much-rumoured Black Flag remake, first reported by Kotaku in 2023. According to multiple sources cited at the time, the project was in early development and aimed to do more than simply port the original to modern consoles.
Ubisoft Singapore, known for pioneering Assassin’s Creed’s evolving ocean technology, was reportedly heavily involved in modernising the title, suggesting a significant technical overhaul rather than a simple remaster.
A separate report by MP1st in January added that the remake would introduce new systems and content, supporting the theory that Ryan may have returned to the booth for fresh voice lines.
Voice acting tends to occur in the later stages of a game’s development, which could indicate that the remake is further along than originally believed. With Ubisoft not expected to release any major titles this holiday season, the timing of Ryan’s comments has only added fuel to the fire.
Ubisoft has not yet commented on Ryan’s remarks or confirmed the existence of a Black Flag remake. Still, the combination of past reports, and Ryan’s carefully worded tease, has reignited speculation across the community.
Whether it points to a full-scale remake, an enhanced remaster, or even a tie-in with Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, one thing is clear: Edward Kenway’s return is beginning to feel less like a rumour and more like a matter of time.
