Nioh 3 officially revealed, goes open-world
The action-RPG franchise Nioh is officially getting a sequel. The dark fantasy game Nioh 3 will follow a young warrior who is poised to become the next Shogun, but is now in the thick of it battling yokai in feudal Japan. Unlike previous games in the franchise, players will be able to battle using two styles of combat: Samurai and Ninja.
Samurai style is the closest in gameplay to previous Nioh games, giving players access to martial arts-themed abilities, and the ability to block enemy attacks at the last moment. Ninja style focuses on quick movements like dodging and aerial actions, and gives players access to Ninjutsu techniques.
Players can switch between these battle styles on the fly, though they can simply stick to one if they prefer. Nioh 3 will also feature another gameplay departure from previous titles, in that it is now an open-world game. Team Ninja describes the game as having “an open field” that players can explore, filled with secrets and points of interest.
A demo for Nioh 3 is now available, and will remain playable until 18 June, 2025. Nioh 3 launches sometime in 2026. For more games showcased in this week’s State of Play presentation, check out our coverage here.
