Something’s stirring in Pharloom, and it looks like fans can step into it pretty soon.

After six long years, Hollow Knight: Silksong has just received its most significant update yet on Steam. According to SteamDB, one of the game’s backend packages was updated for the first time in over a year, and it’s not a minor tweak.

For fans who’ve followed every crumb on the trail, from blog mentions to baked goods, this is the loudest signal yet that Silksong might finally be nearing release.

Now, with this surprise Steam update and multiple gaming showcases around the corner, fans have fresh reason to believe that the long wait may finally be coming to an end. Some are even speculating that a release date will drop at Summer Game Fest this weekend, while others whisper about the game potentially shadow dropping alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 launch, which officially releases tomorrow (5 June).

Fans are buzzing, but is this the moment they've been waiting for?

For those counting, it’s been over six years since Silksong was announced in 2019. As the sequel to the critically acclaimed Hollow Knight, it promises a new protagonist, new regions, and a whole new climb through the depths of a kingdom in ruin. But with news turning sparse over the years, the game has taken on near-mythical status, its continued absence often turned into the punchline of its own meme.

Still, 2025 has been different. Team Cherry, normally tight-lipped, have shown more signs of life in the last few months than in the past few years combined.

Early in January, Team Cherry co-director William Pellen posted a photo of a chocolate cake, with the anniversary date of the photo coinciding with the Nintendo Direct for the Nintendo Switch 2. This later turned out to be true, with Silksong making a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance during the first Nintendo Direct, with an announcement that the game is coming out this year.

On top of this, an Xbox blog post casually listed Silksong alongside games that already have release dates and news. Most recently, Team Cherry also announced early in May that Silksong will be playable at an Australian museum in September. This latest Steam update only adds to everyone’s excitement.

So while caution is still the name of the game (after all, we’ve been here before), it could be time to start believing that the wait is actually coming to an end, and Silksong might soon leave the realm of speculation and finally step into the spotlight. Until then, fans can keep doing what they do best: combing through code, unravelling riddles, and holding onto hope with a grip stronger than Hornet’s needle.

After all, if there’s one thing Hollow Knight fans know, it’s how to endure.
