This week, Contra makes an unexpected but very welcome return.

New week, new games. If you’re not keeping busy with Helldiver 2’s new mechs, likely, you’re already itching for something new to play. Fortunately, this week brings us two new-ish games to play and more episodes of Invincible Season 2 to watch - so you’re not going to be bored either way. You could also just read a book, if none of these suit your fancy. Have you read A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles? It’s very good.

But I digress. Here’s what we’re checking out this week:

What we’re playing

The classic run-and-gun franchise Contra is making a comeback with Contra: Operation Galuga, launching on March 12 this week. If you’ve played Contra before, you’ll know that these games are all about running through side-scrolling levels and shooting down hordes of enemies, mechs and bosses. The sequel doesn’t change much of that formula, but it does bring 3D visuals to the table with a handful of new playable characters.

If you’re in the mood for something a little more silly, try What the Golf? when it hits PlayStation consoles on March 14. The game is already out on PC, iOS and Nintendo Switch, which means that we already know it’s great! This is a physics-based puzzle comedy disguised as a cartoonish golf game, but don’t be fooled - it’s as far from a golf simulator as you can possibly get.

What we’re watching

While games take a backseat in the wake of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s juggernaut launch, movies and TV shows continue to chug along. This week, Invincible Season 2 finally returns on March 14 with four final episodes after a four month-long break. Mark’s father has been captured by the Viltrumites, leaving him in charge of their impending invasion of Earth. He can barely take one Viltrumite in a fight, let alone an army, so the odds of him saving the planet aren’t too good.

Netflix also has a zany TV comedy called Chicken Nugget out on March 15, and its premise is absolutely unbelievable: when a woman steps into a strange machine and transforms into a chicken nugget, her father and admirer embark on a desperate quest to turn their beloved nugget back into a human, non-chicken, person. You can’t tell me your interest isn’t at least piqued.
