We are four days away from The International 3 and we think it is good for the folks to know the competing teams a little better, merely not your love and feelings for the team but purely quantitative data. We pulled the drafts from their games from the 4th of June, the first day of 6.78 patch, until today and from there, we analyzed team patterns and their tendency to run certain heroes.

This article is the third part of a five-series article highlighting teams' playstyle.

  1. Europe
  2. South East Asia
  3. Wildcards
  4. North America
  5. China

Today, we present to you Quantic Gaming and Rattlesnake, the wildcards. The best-of-five wildcard match will be played on the 2nd of August and the winner of the match-up will secure their spot for The International 3.

We also took enemy ban % against X team ban % to really highlight the sort of respect ban these teams were facing. The higher the % difference, the higher the % these heroes got respect banned. High numbers also mean how scared the opponents are against these heroes when facing a particular team.

When people talk about Quantic's draft, Treant Protector (27.1%) and Outworld Devourer (25.0%) are always the first two heroes that come to mind and rightfully so as well. Quantic introduced Treant and OD back into the meta-game in Dreamhack Summer and since then, the heroes have been heavily banned by opponents in every game. Looking over to the ban table, you can see that Quantic has never banned Treant and will almost always pick it up if the opponents do not do something about it. The difference in ban % of the Treant and the OD are 56.3% and 43.8%, a respect ban indeed.

The two respect bans above create more problems for Quantic's opponents because commonly banned heroes such as Batrider will go through. Capitalizing on the "fear of OD and Treant", Quantic picked up Batrider 31.3% of the time. This "fear" problem is not only problematic because Quantic get to pick Batrider, the advantage is that Quantic gets to control the flow of the draft every single time. Quantic is the only team in The International 3 with Batrider among the top 10 picks.

All the attention on Treant and OD aside, Quantic also picked Bane (33.3%) multiple times in the past month, making it the second highest pick after top pick Gyrocopter (37.5%). If you were to look over to the ban table, notice that Quantic almost always never ban Lifestealer while only picking it up in 4.2% of all games, they are clearly using Lifestealer as a bait to justify the Bane pick.

One unorthodox hero we see of Quantic's line-up is the Lich which was picked up 18.8% of the time post-patch. Quantic tend to run the Lich on the off-lane, denying creeps and disrupting the creep wave equilibrium to great effectiveness. Besides that, the presence of an off-lane Lich forces their opponents to run safe-lane trilane because common side-lane solo heroes such as Bounty Hunter can't stand against Lich's Frost Nova spam. Apart from creating more space for his own carry, Lich's constant creep denying also makes sure Quantic will be in a comfortable position in the mid-game against underleveled carry and supports. This is also the reason why Quantic's off-table highest bans are heroes that can withstand Lich's nukes, Lone Druid (52.1%) and Dark Seer (50.0%).

Rattlesnake is very known for running a lot of different strats and therefore, they have low numbers on all their picks with Alchemist and Lifestealer sharing the top spot at 24.4%. The randomness of Rattlesnake is highlighted even further in the ban table where you can see more than 10 heroes have a difference in ban % of 10 or more, signifying that teams usually have no proper game plan against Rattlesnake and in most cases, wing it.

One thing that is undeniable in Rattlesnake's draft however, is how greedy they are. Alchemist (24.4%), Lifestealer (24.4%), Dragon Knight (22.0%) and Gyrocopter (22.0%) made the top four picks and despite Rattlesnake's tendency to boldly run 3-core or sometimes the 4-core, they seems to always have a way to make sure the game last till mid or late game. This is because some core heroes such as Alchemist and Gyrocopter can be used as supports and with history on our side, Rattlesnake is definitely not shy to do so.

One thing to notice in the picks table is the Clockwerk which is still picked 17.1% of all Rattlesnake games. Clockwerk has recently fallen in ranks after the 6.78 nerf and while other teams are starting to move away from it, Rattlesnake is the only remaining team in TI3 that pick it on a consistent basis. The faith is high on Kabu, one of the best Clockwerk players in the East.
