Here’s the impression of introducing esports to his dad who is absolutely unfamiliar with the Overwatch community or gaming community in general.
The YouTube channel Korean Englishman focuses on a pair of English guys experiencing and living in Korea. As esports is a solid part of Korean culture, they decided to introduce one of their dads to esports culture, specifically focused on Overwatch.
Before going through this experience, the dad’s skeptical view of gaming included: 'teenagers in their own rooms', 'not socializing', 'living in their own world' etc. Throughout the video we clearly see his view change as he gets accustomed to the social aspects of PC Bangs and attending live events. 'It’s very social, people are involved in the community of the esport'.
Whether you have tried to explain esports to your parents/older family, or you want to, the video below should be entertaining and familiar:
For some gaming is a means of relaxing, for others gaming is paired with a heap of stress. It might not have been an easy task to teach his father to play Overwatch, but in the end it was worth it. As esports breaks through into mainstream, more and more people will come to understand that skill is always worth celebrating, even in purely virtual media.
