Overwatch Winter Premiere Phase One Group Play starts off strong, and will continue today

The Overwatch Winter Premiere is underway once again with phase one of Group play.
One of the biggest events for Overwatch has just concluded day one of Group play. From teams dropping out of the tourney altogether, unsuspecting team compositions and unsuspected server crashes, the first round was certainly an interesting one.
Renegades (ex-Kingdom eSports), Luminosity, Citizen 7, Complexity, FaZe Clan, Immortals, Kungarna and Team Liquid are fighting it out to determine which six teams will advance to phase two of group play taking place January 17-19.
Renegades had an amazing performance against FaZe Clan, sweeping the team 2-0. FaZe Clan seemed to never get any momentum going on any map, allowing Renegades to steamroll over them; all this after FaZe was given another chance at advancing in the tournament after Cloud9 and Fnatic dropped out to pursue APEX in South Korea. One of the MVP’s of the match, Renegades' Ricky “ManofSnow” Felty, continues to play an impressive D.Va with perfectly-timed self-destructs to not only get necessary picks but also drain the opponents' defence, allowing game-changing team wipes.
Match two of the evening, Citizen7 vs. Luminosity Gaming, had another team sweep all maps for the win, this time by Luminosity. Citizen7 was never able to fully recover from the triple DPS composition that Luminosity fantastically performed during their matchup. With the three DPS played by Alexandre “Spree ” Vanhomwegen, Toni “Ube” Häkli and Arthur “Eissfeldt” Marx, Luminosity was able to destroy Citizen7's lineup for the win.
The most controversial match of the evening was compLexity Gaming vs. Kungarna. During Overtime of Map 3 on Hollywood, Kungarna was able to push the payload all the way to the end forcing Complexity to do the same in order to win the match. During Overtime, Complexity looked like they were actually going to push the objective to the end as well, but as the match went on the server suddenly crashed leaving viewers perplexed on whether Complexity could’ve actually won that match. Due to the crash, officials decided to replay the entire map from the beginning. Given another chance, Complexity was able to come back and beat Kungarna 2-1.
The last match, Immortals vs. Team Liquid, was the closest match of the evening. Eventually, it was Immortals who were able to come out on top of Team Liquid. Immortals were able to counter almost every tactic that Team Liquid threw their way, which led to a 2-1 final victory on King's Row.
Phase one of Group Play will continue up until the January 5 (at 3:30 PM PST/6:30 PM EST/0:30 CET) this week and then resume January 10-12 next week. Stay tuned to GosuGamers for more news on this exciting event!
