The leading esports organization is venturing into FIFA hand-in-hand with the Italian football club.

Traditional sports teams discovering eSports has been the hottest new trend in the industry. With the Philadelphia 76ers acquiring Dignitas, Miami Heat investing in Misfits and Apex Gaming and Schalke 04, Panathinaikos, Valencia and Manchester City—among others—also opening their eSports divisions, the scene is witness to unprecedented level of interest from the mainstream.

The latest on this long list is Italy’s AS Roma football club, which is entering the eSports world of FIFA together with long-standing esports franchise Fnatic. Sam “Poacher” Carmody, Aman “Aman” Seddiqi, and Nicoló “Insa” Mirra will wear the crimson of AS Roma and the orange of Fnatic.

The trio will be officially representing the colors of Roma, while management alongside training and other esports logistics will be handled by Fnatic, which has been entrusted with supporting the football club’s investment with its esports know-how.

“It's humbling. It feels amazing as a person who has been an advocate of FIFA eSports for years to see professional football clubs signing FIFA pros,” Aman said in an interview with his new club. “The investment into FIFA by the clubs and EA really proves how far we have come.”

Roma might be the latest club to invest in eSports but it certainly won’t be the last. Belgium’s century-old RSC Anderlecht has started looking for FIFA pro players itself. The team plans to hold a 256-man league before selecting “the right gamer” and will judge competitors on not just results but also “tactical skills” and “gaming strategy”.
