Not too surprising to many, SlayerS disbands and closes a chapter of StarCraft 2 history. This concludes a devastating year for the team shortly before its second anniversary.
For anyone even remotely interested in the competitive scene of StarCraft 2 SlayerS has been a household name. Founded by BroodWar legend Lim "BoxeR" Yo Hwan and his wife Kim "Jessica" Ga Yeon the Korean powerhouse dominated the Global StarCraft 2 Team League from the get go, resulting in two championships in the beginning of 2011. While these victories have been the highlight of the team’s two year history, SlayerS was home to some of the most notorious players of the scene. Names such as MMA, TaeJa, GanZi, Puzzle and Genius stand out amongst other recurrent Code A and Code S competitors.
While Jessica specifically was never someone shy to comment on controversy, things started to spiral out of control in 2012 and culminated in the disbandment of the team we see today. With fan favorite and viewer magnet Dragon leaving in January alongside Golden to pursue their careers at foreign teams, GanZi and TaeJa followed suit shortly after and found new homes in Complexity and Team Liquid, respectively. Internal struggles such as the demotion of MMA was just the beginning of what was yet to come. The departure of coach Ryu in May to join KeSPA team Woongjin Stars seems benign considering the shocking news that would stir up the scene merely 4 months later. SlayerS founder and “Emperor” Boxer would leave his own creation in favor of coaching his former BroodWar team SK Telecom T1. Seen as the nail in the coffin by many, and now proven somewhat correct, SlayerS sees the end of days sooner than most would have hoped for.
