We've reached the end of HoN's 2nd year since its official release. As usual, GosuGamers presents our annual awards to celebrate the honorable efforts of both teams and individuals that stood out in 2011. This is the 5th out of 5 articles showcasing the nominees of the 5th category - the best sololaner.
Be it solo mid, solo sidelane or suicide lane, these players excel at getting the most out of the experience offered to them. Positioning and decision-making is of vital importance to not get caught out by the enemy team in 1v2 and 1v3 situations and give them an advantage going into the mid game. These players do not only avoid death, they manage to kill enemies in their lane against all odds before they start to roam the map and wreak havoc.
Here are your nominees for the best sololaner of 2011.
Nominees for Best Sololaner 2011:
[OK] Kai 'H4nn1' Hanbückers
Specialty:
Winning last year's Best Overall player award despite not really being a member of any team, the German prodigy has since then profiled himself as a sololaner/semi-carry player for Online Kingdom. His experience and talent were an invaluable asset for his former teammates, and his raging episodes were entertaining to the public.
He is known to favor a solo mid Pyromancer a lot more than any other player, but has just as easily performed wonders with more conventional heroes like Pollywog Priest and Soulstealer.
[fntc] Johan 'n0tail' Sundstein
Specialty:
The young Danish mastermind has, during 2011, obtained a legendary status amongst the fans that is matched by only a couple other players. He is a superaggressive, sometimes even suicidal, solo mid player who's not afraid to live on the edge in order to give his team every advantage possible.
One could make an hour long highlight video of just his amazing Pollywog Priest plays, the hero he is best known for, but his Silhouette, Torturer, and Maliken also played a vital role during this Fnatic dominated year.
[SK][coL] Josh 'PAINTITGOLD' Amos
Specialty:
Josh came onto the scene during the second part of the year and instantly mesmerized the fans with his stellar performances. Although he filled a couple different roles during his time in HoN, he established himself as one of the best solo mid players on the market.
He was one of the few players that dared to pick Bombardier even after he was nerfed and still performed amazingly well. His handling of Torturer and Pollywog Priest were also highly praised, and rightfully so.
[fntc] Henrik 'Freshpro' Hansen
Specialty:
Considered to be the best suicide laner in the world for most of the year, he's as good at escaping certain death in impossible situations as he is at entertaining the crowd. The inventor of the infamous "Smacktrick" played in the shadow of his teammates, always performing miracles but rarely getting the praise he deserved.
His Pharaoh and Wildsoul are a one of a kind; not a single player can mimic what he does with those heroes. But he also managed to play a more conservative playstyle at times when it was needed by his team.
[fray] JunLiong 'dabeliuteef' Loh
Specialty:
The sole Southeast Asian nominee has won the hearts of players and spectators alike in just a couple months, and I'd assume many of them said his name aloud after watching him play. His sololaning capabilities are so fearsome that teams don't hesitate to respect ban his favorite heroes – problem is he can play too many of them.
His Valkyrie could threaten even Trixi's if he keeps his stellar performances up, but it's the variety of heroes he can play effectively (be it Pharaoh, Midas, or Tundra) that really makes him stand out.
