According to several Korean media, one of the leading game televisions in South Korea MBC Game is in discussions to change its main genre direction out of gaming and eSports.
Less than a couple of days ago, strong rumors of MBC Game changing to a music television appeared on Korean websites like Fomos.kr and Thisisgame.com. The cable channel of MBC Plus Media has been specializing in gaming and has been among the leading eSports channels in Korea, focusing on StarCraft, WarCraft 3, FIFA, Counter-Strike, Dead or Alive and more.
Updates from several sources related to the issue came as the events developed. An MBC representative said that "it is waiting approval from the boards, but it is nearly decided now, moreover they don't even consider game contents as sub genre, means they will remove all game contents".
By Korean law, if MBC Game changes its genre to music, it will be allowed to schedule only 20% of sub-genres which could very well mean the broadcasting end of MSL, SPL or both.
MBC Game's chief of production Jang Jae-Hyuk replied shortly after those news were made apparent.
- "The change into a music channel is not a simple rumor, but nothing is certain as of yet, the internal decision making currently in progress," said Jang. "Even if it passes, there are several steps like approval from the Korea Communications Commission. We do not want to spread concerning news about eSports, there is also possibility of not changing. We do not want needless aftermath."
- "I know some media [ThisIsGame.com - translator's note] wrote like it is confirmed that MBC game changed to Music channel, clearly it is gone too far now", further commented Jang and said they will make a formal objection to them.
