With recent wins coming from headliners like Kas, Happy, and Strelok, the ESL-organized Go4SC2 Cup Sunday event has been a consistent viewer's favorite. This week, however, the regular stars blinked out in the best-of-one's, and a few under the radar players advanced to the finals.
AdelScott, the beta veteran coming off a recent TSL run, found himself eliminated in the fifth round by a Dutch player named Harstem, who would go on to the semi-finals. Grubby joined Adel with an early loss to imba.FXOpen.control (who advanced to the quarterfinals - also to lose to Harstem).
On the other side of the bracket, Finnish player torecito went on a tear before running into RG|Fury in the semifinals. Fury, a Swedish Terran, had just come off a 2:1 win over Kenzy in the quarterfinals and was not to be denied. He knocked out his brother from the north in a quick 2:0, relying on hellions in both games and prefacing his finals play.
But in the end victory belonged to Ai.DeathAngel. DeathAngel is a consistent cup performer and Zerg from Romania who's taken home the gold at several European weekly events, including CraftCup. In his semifinal match against Harstem, DeathAngel won a quick 2:0, first by macroing roaches and breaking Harstem's third, and then by pinning Harstem on Shakuras with a dozen mutas while droning greedily and taking the map.
The finals between Fury and DeathAngel were intense. Game one, Fury scouted close air positions and attempted the same Marine-Hellion drop but was met with ample resistance and the drop was cleaned up. He transitioned into cloaked banshee, but DeathAngel stayed well on top as a few Mutalisks popped to minimize the damage. The Zerg was then able to freely expand and apply pressure to the Marine-starved Terran who had just barely come upon his second base. After a Zergling run-by took out a chunk of Fury's worker force, DeathAngel smoked out his opponent's army and Fury tapped.
Game two on Tal'Darim saw a calm Fury open with 14CC. DeathAngel replied with a Roach bust but was unable to do any significant damage. After losing most of his first attack, DeathAngel continued to try to bust the front, coming close to running away with the games as SCVs were pulled a few times, but Fury always seemed to come out a few units ahead. After teching to tanks, Fury was able to return the aggression and plowed through DeathAngel's defenses; DeathAngel tried to equalize with a ling counter into Fury's main. Fury's third base kept him in the game and DeathAngel was completely unable to hold onto anything at home. He GG'd and tied the series at 1:1.
Unfortunately, Fury's luck wasn't to hold. In the next game, DeathAngel repeated a strategy he'd used earlier in the tournament on Shakuras; Mutalisks into mass drones and bases. As Fury teched up to mech play and took his own third, Mutalisks arrived and took out three 85% complete turrets, forcing a SCV pull. A few banelings rolled in as a follow up, and caught the stacked retreating SCVs on the ramp, costing Fury an easy dozen workers for little cost to the Zerg.
Fury's mech army came in and cleaned up the base for mining, but from there it was quite the the uphill battle. He was unable to keep up with four-base Zerg without his own bases saturated. Facing a 60 supply deficit at one point, Fury made a valiant last stand with several Thors and a mech contingent, but was overrun handily by 200/200 ling baneling.
Game four sealed the series, as Zerglings ran past some hellions and snuck by a lowered supply depot to get into Fury's main. They scored a number of worker kills, but Fury replied with a blue-flame run by to equalize the worker count. DeathAngel was ahead and had established his third, however, so he was able to quickly re-saturate; with only two CCs, Fury was still a touch behind. DeathAngel skipped any sort of tech and simply amassed a ling-roach force off of three bases, sending in the Roaches first to tank and following with speedlings. Fury was again producing Thor/Hellion, and the timing, micro and composition of DeathAngel's force was more than he could handle. A Terran without an army is hardly a Terran at all, and Fury was forced to tap out and concede the match.
