The first day of Intel Extreme Masters World Championship saw Jung Woo "Ace" Seo going home with a perfect 5-0 result in Group A.

The StarTale Protoss had little trouble defeating his first-time opponents. Even Greg "IdrA" Fields, who he knew from the Korean ladder, was defeated 2-0.

IdrA came in second in the group, losing only to Ace. The homecoming American showcased a very dominating Zerg style, and will likely enter the quarter final as the favorite against the Group B second runner-up.

Stefan "MorroW" Andersson was the last player to advance to the playoffs from Group A. He cut it close, as he was placed in a possible tiebreaker situation with Tomasz "Tarson" Boron and Oleksiy "White-Ra" Krupnyk. However, due to his 2-0 win against Tarson, the advantage was in the Swedish Zerg's keep.

Ending in last was Kevin "QXC" Riley, who failed to win a series, though taking one map off of White-Ra.
