It’s a good idea to match your buddy to what you’re setting out to do, especially in mid- or late game when you have a lot of them unlocked. The Renowned Trait (Coco, Talon, or Zephyr) is excellent for expanding or reinforcing territory, so it’s a good idea to bring one of them along whenever you’re headed to the outskirts of your territory. Talon specifically is perfect for battles, as he also provides the Inspiring Trait, which will boost your colony fighters.
For mining, Persistent (Jag or Glimmer) can be useful, though it’s not a necessity. Of the two, Glimmer’s passive skill is slightly more useful. Alternatively, you might to bring a Lucky cat (Bob, Charlotte, or Rosemary) or a good fighter like Champ or, less ideally, Spark.
Phantom is the obvious choice but unless you’re really struggling to catch prey (and therefore need the help from the Subtle trait), I would go for Charlotte instead as she will boost your luck. Though, if you’re planning to hunt in contested areas, you might want to forgo either of them in favor of a Renowned cat.
For herb gathering, you want a Delicate cat (Alabaster, Buttercup, or Fliss). The caveat for hunting applies here too: if you’re going to the edges of your territory, consider bringing a Renowned cat instead for the influence boost.
If you don’t have a strong intention, you can’t go wrong with Bob. Lucky + Enterprising are good traits to have around no matter what you’re up to.
