Shin Megami Tensei fanatics, prepare yourself! Atlus dropped a bomb with brand new information and a trailer on Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. What is probably the coolest part? We’ve got a total makeover for our main character! There are two different story paths you can take – and this Shin Megami Tensei V new look belongs to the “Vengeance” path. It’s very different from the typical blue Nahobino we know and love. Now he’s got a wicked sickle, but we know very little else about this new form. You can find out what we mean by going to now!
New Demons, New Powers, New Threats
There are over 270 demon creatures, both old and new, with super cool special moves called Magatsuhi Skills. You’ll need special items and the right demon buddies to pull them off. These skills can be game-changers – you can unleash incredible attacks, buff your team, or even heal them up.
The new skills are certainly cool, but they also brought a new generation of foes: the hulking Magatsuhi demons. These glowing red enemies are much tougher and will chase you down. You can reward yourself by defeating them but be prepared for a fight. It’s a mixed blessing: more power, but also more danger.
If you actually play and do other stuff in the game, the characters can be leveled far above average, and for those really pushing it there’s an entire new difficulty mode where the enemies are all ridiculously strong! It’s like the gym for diehards in the game. They’ve also tweaked some battle mechanics – like letting you cast magic while the game is on autopilot. These changes will happen in both the main story and the new Vengeance path.
Demon Training and Bonding: A Deeper Dive
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance takes a significant step forward in demon interaction. Players can now directly control specific demons in dedicated side quests, offering a fresh perspective on gameplay. While it’s a nice change of pace, these segments feel more like extended tutorials than engaging challenges. Still, it’s a fun way to get to know your demonic companions better.
Demon Haunts are a welcome addition. These chill zones are also great for bonding with your demon party mates. The ability to chat, receive rewards, and even snap pictures creates a stronger connection. It is a simple mechanic, yet one which greatly enhances the experience, but these conversations seem to have minimal impact on demon stats, and rewards could be more hefty to really encourage frequent visits.
Roaming Freely in Da’at
It significantly updates its exploration mechanics from the original. Magatsuhi portals enable easy access to fast travel points and the map is now clear and legible. The new Magatsuhi rails reveal previously unseen vistas and inspire curiosity with rewards for seeking out the unknown.
The Quest Navigator is an absolute game changer. Its nifty features such as leaving a trail and highlighting points of interest mean getting lost is a thing of the past. Although still a risky place, getting to the underworld is a breeze now.
New Quality Improvements
Vengeance has a slew of small tweaks that make a big difference. You can pick things up further away, read the game’s instructions whenever you want, sneak attack enemies and there are fewer flying enemies trying to ambush you. You also get more of those cool Miracles that help you out. And not to mention the demons – they still have more to do in battle – awesome!
Two of the biggest changes are game-changers. First, you can save your game anywhere, not just at those special spots. Second, the Estoma shield is now a Miracle instead of a demon skill, so you don’t have to use up a valuable skill slot.
Conclusion
Shin Megami Tensei V is a significant update that continues on the foundation of its predecessor. It features a fresh story path, a slew of quality-of-life tweaks and refined exploration mechanics – for a more refined and enjoyable experience. Although the main gameplay is commonly the same, these updates and refinements give the game new life and allow it to be a worthy choice for beginners and returning players.
