Gears of War Reloaded Arrives August 26 on All Platforms

Gears of War Reloaded has officially been announced, and it’s more than just a remaster. Launching on August 26, 2025, this release becomes the first Gears of War title to launch across multiple platforms: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, cloud gaming, PlayStation 5, and Steam. It will also be available day one with Game Pass Ultimate.
Developed by Coalition Studio in collaboration with Sumo Interactive and Disbelief, Gears of War Reloaded is not simply an update to the Ultimate Edition. It’s a dedicated re-release of the original Gears of War game using modern technology to revive its campaign and versus multiplayer components. This release aims to reintroduce the franchise to a wider audience—especially PlayStation and new PC players.
What Gears of War Reloaded Actually Is
Many fans have asked whether Gears of War Reloaded is a new title, a remake, or a remaster. The answer is a blend of all three. Based on the Gears of War Ultimate Edition’s PC build using Unreal Engine 3, Reloaded rebuilds the original game with upgraded visuals, native optimization, and cross-platform support.
Rather than compiling the entire original trilogy into one package, the developers are spacing out the remakes. This allows each title to retain core components such as multiplayer and Horde mode, which wouldn’t have fit well in a single bundled collection, especially under Unreal Engine 5’s resource demands.
By focusing on the original game first, Microsoft and Kition Studio aim to introduce a new wave of players to the origins of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. The campaign and PvP components return intact, maintaining the spirit of the franchise’s early days.
A Full Graphics Comparison Across Six Generations
To show how far the franchise has come, the Gears of War Reloaded reveal included comparisons between six versions of the first game:
Xbox 360 (2006)
PC version (2007)
Xbox Series X (backwards compatible)
Gears of War Ultimate Edition (Xbox One, 2015)
Gears of War Ultimate Edition (PC, 2016)
Gears of War Reloaded (Xbox Series X, 2025)
In-game shots from iconic locations such as Slab Prison and the City of Ephyra have been shared in 4K resolution. Side-by-side comparisons highlight upgraded textures, lighting, environmental effects, and smoother animations.
Unlike the 2015 remaster, Reloaded looks to preserve the original feel of gameplay while significantly enhancing visual fidelity and accessibility for modern systems.
What’s Next for the Gears Franchise
With Gears of War Reloaded on the way and Gears of War E-Day already announced, it’s clear Microsoft is committing to a long-term revival of the franchise. This strategy may continue with GOW 2 and Gow 3 Reloaded, especially with their 20th anniversaries approaching in 2028 and 2031 respectively.
Rumors about a trilogy remaster have circulated since 2022. However, the current path—releasing each game separately with full multiplayer support—appears to be the more practical and fan-focused option.
The move away from bundled campaigns and toward dedicated releases shows a commitment to giving each title room to breathe and evolve. With both multiplayer and campaign supported, the Reloaded versions are being positioned as definitive experiences.
