A PS5 exclusive had many players on their knees out of anticipation. Sucker Punch Production is about to release the successor to Ghost of Tsushima called Ghost of Yotei in 2025. But what does the new chapter, Ghost of Yotei, tell about?

A New Hero and Setting in Feudal Japan

Expect a dramatic time leap as soon as Ghost of Yotei begins. This skipped time to 300 years after the events that occurred in the Ghost of Tsushima. Players will be playing a new role this time as Atsu, the new protagonist. The excitement is all high in the sky with its voice actor.

The character is voiced by Erika Ishii who is known in Apex Legends and Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The Ghost of Yotei will certainly be different from the known Ghost of Tsushima. It’ll take place in the northern territory of Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), surrounded by the majestic Mount Yotei. They leave behind the familiar shores of Tsushima Island as a fresh start in this new title.

Andrew Goldfarb, Sucker Punch’s senior communication manager, shared the team’s thoughts on these changes. According to him, the result came out of their desire to produce fresh gameplay while keeping it familiar at the same time. With this setting, there will be more diverse environments in Mount Yotei and intriguing narratives. After all, the region was mysteriously described as a place where people come “to disappear.”

Enhanced Combat and New Gameplay Features

Besides the new setting and character for Ghost of Yotei, Sucker Punch made additions to the gameplay system. They began by introducing firearms in the game including the matchlock guns. This will be a complement to the usual sword-based combat that many knew the series for.

Also, they transformed Atsu into a character that is capable of dual-wielding weapons. With this adjustment, he can offer more varied combat options than Jin Sakai in Ghost of Tsushima. Moreover, Sucker Punch improved the game by addressing some of the criticism in the previous version.

This time they promised to add more varied activities to prevent the “repetitive nature” that open-world games have. In their reveal trailer, Atsu faced off against a wolf that eventually backed down in that scene. So, some suggest that there might be animal interactions in the new Ghost of Yotei.

Story and Setting Details

For now, there are still no specific plot details shared by Sucker Punch Production in their official accounts. However, the players who anticipated its release know that Ghost of Yotei will be an “underdog vengeance” story. Basically, it’ll be a game of revenge between Atsu and the villains.

The narrative seemingly positions Atsu to be both a hunter and a hunted character during the trailer. It revealed a message to Atsu claiming, “Every Ronin here is after you.” It might be a more dangerous situation for now as it is far different from the organized samurai clans in Tsushima.

Also, the northern setting of Ezo significantly represents the different aspects of Feudal Japan. It showed one where it is less strictly controlled by the Shogunate. Further, becoming a home to several indigenous people and ronin. Definitely, it creates a perfect set-up for unique storylines paired with rich Japanese culture.

Release Information and Technical Details

Breathe for now since Ghost of Yotei’s exact release date is still kept under wraps. Yet, it is certain to come out this year 2025 to end the long wait. The Ghost of Yotei will only launch exclusively on PS5 to maximize the stunning graphics on the platform.

Currently, there is only speculation about the potential PC release after the PS5 launch. Many believe it’ll follow the same pattern set in Ghost of Tsushima. PS5 players have been wanting this for a long time. It’ll even utilize DualSense controller features for haptic feedback that they liked. So with this, they can feel every attack strike thrown at them.

Conclusion

Will Ghost of Yotei surpass the success of its previous release, Ghost of Tsushima? Everything seems to be promising with Ghost of Yotei after they release some of the changes coming way in 2025. It’ll surely give a different gameplay experience this time that both new and old players can try.
