More Canceled DOOM 4 Concept Art and Animations Appear Online
A fresh batch of development assets from the canceled DOOM 4 has surfaced online, giving fans another glimpse at id Software’s abandoned vision for the franchise. Shared by community archivists in July 2026, the newly released material includes concept art, animation tests, weapon models, enemy designs, and footage from an early version of the game that was ultimately scrapped before the series was rebooted.
The discovery offers another look at one of gaming’s most well-known canceled projects and sheds more light on the direction id Software explored before creating DOOM (2016).
Newly Shared Assets Showcase Unfinished Content
Originally announced in 2008, DOOM 4 spent several years in development before id Software decided to cancel the project and begin again with a new creative vision. While some technology and ideas carried over into the eventual reboot, much of the original game’s content was left behind.
Over the weekend, X users @Runhob and @WadOverdose, who have previously shared archived DOOM 4 materials, posted another collection of previously unseen assets. According to the shared content, the release includes:
- Early character and weapon animations
- Concept art for environments and enemies
- Prototype weapon models
- Animation tests
- Unfinished gameplay systems
- Additional in-game assets that had not been publicly shown before
The footage also highlights early enemy behaviors and first-person weapon animations, offering insight into mechanics that never made it into a finished release. Several pieces of concept art depict locations and visual themes that were later abandoned when development restarted.
Another Look at DOOM’s Lost Reboot
This isn’t the first time material from the canceled project has appeared online. Over the years, fans have uncovered various development assets, and id Software itself showcased portions of the original project in Noclip’s documentary covering the creation of DOOM (2016).
The latest archive expands on that history by revealing more of the game’s unfinished content and providing additional context for how the project evolved before being canceled.
Why DOOM 4 Was Canceled
Bethesda and id Software ultimately abandoned the original version of DOOM 4 after deciding it didn’t align with the direction they wanted for the franchise.
The studio chose to restart development from scratch, resulting in DOOM (2016), which shifted the focus toward fast-paced combat, aggressive movement, and gameplay inspired by the series’ classic entries. The reboot went on to successfully revive the franchise and laid the foundation for later releases.
Although DOOM 4 never reached players, newly uncovered development materials continue to surface, offering fans a rare look at an alternate version of the series that remained behind the scenes.
