Marvel Rivals News: May 15 Update Adds Free Skins, Chrono Shield, and Patch Fixes

In this week’s Marvel Rivals news, Netease launched the Galactus Gift event on May 15 to celebrate the one-year mark since its closed alpha. Unlike time-limited content, this event is permanent and available to all players, both new and existing. Players can unlock multiple cosmetic rewards by playing quick matches, competitive, or AI modes.
Rewards include two name plates (Dr. Doom and Dr. Doom 2099), two sprays, and most notably, a free costume coin. This marks only the second time players can earn a coin without spending real money. It can be used to unlock one of 33 outfits and does not require a bundle purchase like the prior Fanta Venom offer.
Chrono Shield Card: Not Pay-to-Win
One of the most discussed changes is the introduction of the Chrono Shield Card, which temporarily prevents point losses in ranked matches. Initially assumed to be a pay-to-win feature, the system is restricted to players ranked Gold or lower and cannot be purchased outside the event.
The developers confirmed there are no current plans to sell this card as a microtransaction. This design aims to give lower-ranked players a chance to stabilize without punishing high-skill competitors. With the clarification, most of the criticism appears to have cooled.
Namor and Punisher Skins Hit the Shop
Two high-profile hero skins headline the cosmetics update. Namor receives his sixth variant: the Retrox Uniform, available for 1,400 units (or 1,600 in a bundle with extras like an emote, spray, name plate, and MVP screen). This joins his growing list of available looks, from the Mauv recolor to Wakanda Forever and Savage Submariner designs.
Punisher fans finally get a new addition with the Dangan Ronin Legendary Skin, priced at 2,000 units solo or as part of a 2,400-unit bundle. The bundle features a striking MVP screen, animated name plate, and more. This marks his fifth overall skin.
Season Zero Battle Pass Returns (May 15–29)
Marvel Rivals re-released the original Season Zero Battle Pass for a limited period. Running from May 15 to May 29, it costs 590 lattice — 100 more than the original price — and contains no free tier rewards. This decision aims to preserve a reward balance between original supporters and new players.
The developers also hinted that future battle pass re-releases may occur. If so, they’ll be spaced at least two seasons apart and cost a minimum of 20% more than their original versions. While some players expressed frustration, many welcomed the chance to catch up on early content.
Custom Game and Console Sound Updates (Marvel Rivals News May 2025)
A few system-level improvements round out the patch. Custom tournament rooms now support advanced ban and pick rules, giving players more control during competitive play. On consoles, a new toggle lets users choose between default or premium skin sound effects.
Bug fixes addressed a lingering voiceover glitch and several map void issues on Krakcoa and Clintar. Characters also received targeted fixes: Venom and Hulk no longer get stuck midair, Doctor Strange’s portals no longer vanish in destructible zones, and Thing’s charge animation no longer teleports randomly.
Infinity Comic Finale & Marvel Ignite Preview
Issue #12 of the Marvel Rivals Infinity comic concludes the Hellfire Gala arc, with Extron battling several heroes. After taking out Magic, she respawns and fights back — setting up a potential shift in the narrative for upcoming updates.
Looking ahead, Marvel Ignite launches on June 11. This standalone comic features stories inspired by Peach Momoko’s Demon Days-style designs, including the Dangan Ronin Punisher skin. The release ties into the game’s ongoing integration of Marvel’s broader universe.
