While the game is relatively new, the Dynasty Warriors series is not. The series revolves around the struggle for power in ancient China, and brings that struggle to life through hack-n-slash action combat. For Unleashed, developer Nexon drew their inspiration from one particular game, Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends. The mobile adaptation features 48 characters from the series, new modes, including siege and conquest modes, as well as stunning cutscenes.

In February, when the mobile game launched in select countries, Nexon called it a soft launch, as more improvements were needed. Players from these countries were assured that their progress would not be erased once the game was open to the wider public.

Only a few days before the worldwide launch, Nexon released an update that included a bronze, silver, and gold frame system, a legendary weapon system, the Lucky Shop, new officers, mutants, and bug fixes.

Dynasty Warriors: Unleashed is free-to-play, with the option to pay for in-app purchases. It is the first of the series to come to mobile devices, as another planned adaptation, Dynasty Warriors: Blazing Battles, is still in development.
