1st September video games round-up: A new PlayStation State of Play scheduled for this week

Update: That was the world of video games today on 1st September. A full transcript of everything that occurred is available below to digest at your leisure.
September is here so we're also here with another daily report, collating all of today's gaming news and events in one place.
As September arrives, the fabled release of Hollow Knight sequel Silksong approaches. The game we seem to have been waiting an eternity for releases this week. Will it have been worth the wait?
September also marks the beginning of an uptick in big releases as the holiday shopping season approaches - I can't believe I'm alluding to Christmas already - and today we see the review-results of one of them: eerie action adventure Hell is Us. It was a mixed bag for Ed.
Onwards!
Our live coverage of this event has finished.

September: yay or nay?
Good morning, good morning. So, September. My partner turned to me yesterday and announced it was one of her favourite months of the year, which surprised me. Her reasoning: you get a bit of autumn but also some warmth of summer still, which I can understand. But it's always felt very 'back to school' to me, very January-lite, very serious and sobering.
How do you all feel about September?
Robert Purchese 08:44 am UTCSilksong release times and price confirmed by Team Cherry
Image credit: Team CherryIf you were planning on taking 4th September off to play Silksong, heads up that the game won't actually be released until mid-afternoon here in the UK.
Silksong will be available from 3pm UK time on 4th September. Silksong release times for other regions are as follows:
- 7am PT
- 10am ET
- 4pm CEST
- 11pm JST
As previously rumoured, Silksong will retail for $20.
- Silksong won't release bang on midnight on 4th September, so maybe don't take the whole day off
2much says: Good morning! This weekend I played some Lost Soul Aside and come to the conclusion that, while not completely without merit, the game is a real stinker. Fifty quid well spent! Fortunately the box was actually damaged in transit so I can get a refund anyway. I also checked out the Sonic Racing CrossWorlds beta and have been having a blast with it! The online is so chaotic but fun, and the game is really polished (on PS5 at least) and feels great to play. I think some people will struggle a bit with the sheer amount of BS being thrown at you, but the actualy mechanic of warping between worlds and the first place position getting to decide where to go makes the game really exciting
That's encouraging about Sonic! Less so about Lost Soul Aside.
Robert Purchese 08:51 am UTCFairgames director leaves for Warner Bros Montreal
Fairgames director Daniel Drapeau has announced his new job role as creative director at Warner Bros Montreal, offically leaving Haven Studios. This marks the second senior lead departing the company in only a few months, as Haven founder Jade Raymond also left back in May.
What Drapeau is working on remains a mystery, but we do know that Warner Bros Montreal was hiring for an executive producer for a new live service game a short while ago, so it could very well be that. Not a lot of news at all about Fairgames, and what little we get doesn't appear to be too good.

Have you ever wondered what Quake 1 would look like in today's Unreal Engine? Well wonder no more - there's an indie developer out there making it.
A reader emailed about this project - thanks! - and it appears to be a thing of passion rather a thing of business, designed to make a quick buck. I imagine that's the only way it'd skirt copyright issues anyway.
Nice idea! I'm always intrigued to see what old games might look like if made today. Now, where's that Knights of the Old Republic remake when you need it?
Fan indie Quake 1 - Trailer Watch on YouTube Robert Purchese 09:03 am UTCRogueywon says: My office is marking the start of September in traditional fashion - with parents comparing notes on when their kids go back to school and shooting looks of venomous envy at anybody whose offspring returned today.
Haha! I forgot to mention the parental relief of normality returning - and breathing space returning - as kids go back to school. A highly sought-after moment.
hughroberts says: I always find September and October just disappear and then all of a sudden I've gone from shorts to christmas adverts in no time. Also moving house which inevitably means having no money so creating a gaming backlog for being indoors for the next two months.
Yes! I hear this.
Rahmus says: September is a transitional month, you can feel nature and people changing gears. Oh, and bigger releases appear. Big fan.
Convinced a friend to buy Everybody's Golf when it comes out this week so I'm hopeful for cosy golf times coming my way.
"Transitional" - I like that. It feels poetic.
Robert Purchese 09:10 am UTCHell is Us is an absorbing yet divisive adventure
Image credit: Rogue Factor / EurogamerI really wanted to like Hell is Us: it ticks so many boxes for me with its grim atmosphere, Zelda-like dungeons and survival horror puzzles. But there's a fine line between being cryptic and tedious, and studio Rogue Factor hasn't always found the right balance.
Still, Hell is Us thrives on its nightmarish atmosphere and backdrop of horrific warfare. The lack of map makes for an absorbing experience, though I suspect it'll prove divisive for some players.

Cyberpunk 2077 anime Edgerunners is releasing on Blu-ray
Image credit: CrunchyrollIf you still like to have a physical blu ray disc to pop into your player of choice, and also happen to be a fan of Cyberpunk 2077 anime spinoff Edgerunners, then ready your wallet.
Crunchyroll has announced a physical release for the first series, which will retail in the US for $123.98. It comes with a storyboard booklet from director Hiroyuki Imaishi, a "special" booklet, three animation cel sheets and a two year anniversary poster.

Lego's Pokémon sets will be particularly pricey
Image credit: LegoA leak of Lego's forthcoming Pokémon sets reports they could be among the company's most expensive sets yet.
We still don't know exactly what the sets will be, but the priciest will be a whopping $649.99 for a 6838 piece set.
Would you pay that much for Pokémon Lego?

Everwild's exec producer moves from Rare to Xbox following game cancellation
Image credit: RareLouise O'Connor, executive producer on the now-cancelled Everwild at Rare, has moved to Xbox Game Studios.
After 25 years at the British studio, she'll now be chief of staff at Xbox. The move follows former head of Rare Craig Duncan, who became head of Xbox Game Studios last year.
Rare veteran Gregg Mayles also left the studio in the wake of July's Microsoft layoffs, after 35 years.

Left 4 Dead creator Mike Booth is working on a new four-player co-op shooter
Image credit: ValveLeft 4 Dead creator Mike Booth is working on a new four-player co-op shooter, which will be "built on the foundations of what made [Left 4 Dead] special", though he stopped short of giving his new project a name or indeed any concept art.
If you are interested in giving it a go ahead of release, the studio is running playtests for a limited number of participants.

Flashback - gaming anniversaries
- Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain turns ten years old today. It was a Eurogamer Essential back in the day, despite that very strange and not-quite-finished feeling closing act. Ten years on, players still haven't rid the MGS5 world of its nukes... but with good reason.
- Mad Max also hits that ten-year milestone today, having bravely launched up against MGS5 - something which the CEO of developer Avalanche Studios later blamed for the game under-performing. This is a truly under-appreciated gem in my opinion, and was given an EG Recommended back in the day. George Miller didn't like it as much as we did, though.
- Crusader Kings 3 is five today. An all-time strategy great, and five years means it's lived longer than a lot of my heirs in that game manage. As with the rest of this series, it birthed incredible reddit conversations that are extremely worrying out of context, with players asking for help killing their kids, becoming the pope, and what to do when your grandson keeps marrying himself.
PlayStation State of Play scheduled for Wednesday, focused on 007: First Light
A new Sony State of Play has been announced for this Wednesday, this tme focused on the upcoming action game 007: First Light. That's the new Bond game developed by the folks behind the Hitman series.
It's set to take place on 3rd September at 11am PT / 2PM ET / 7pm BST / 8pm CEST on the official PlayStation YouTube channel.

Ghibli says: On the parental note: I am patiently waiting for my currently super nocturnal and very messy daughter to return to uni next week. I swear the house work load has doubled over the four months she’s been home.
I love her more than I can say, but equally, not getting woken up at three in the morning by her clumping around the house and her actually doing her own blimmin’ washing will be like a holiday.
I remember being the same so this is a form of payback I do realise, but still… I’m getting old.
Heh I love the phrase "super-nocturnal". It's like the night of night times.
Robert Purchese 14:06 pm UTCKris says: As one of those lucky/unfortunate people without kids (delete as appropriate, I know which one I picked!) back to school only means one thing. That's back to the noise, fumes, increased likely-hood of getting run over (on the road, cycle lane, or yes even pavements if I'm walking) and general ill feelings by stressed out drivers. Plus, even more endless conversations about not finding parking: worse than "let me tell you about my dream".
Long live the summer!
How about that parking!
Robert Purchese 14:07 pm UTC2much says: I played Crusader Kings 3 for an entire day a few months ago because it's on PS+ and I came to the conclusion that the game is the nightmarish combination of extremely addictive and no fun at all. I had to uninstall it because it's in the running for worst days of the year so far.
Nooo! Enacting horrid plans is fun, 2much, fun!
Robert Purchese 15:54 pm UTCKojima Productions celebrates 10th anniversary with "glimpse into future projects"
Image credit: Eurogamer / Kojima ProductionsIf you're lucky enough to be in Japan, Kojima Productions has announced a 10th anniversary event called Beyond The Strand. It's being held in a cinema in Tokyo, will be hosted by Hideo Kojima himself, and promises "a glimpse into future projects".
Keep your eyes peeled on 23rd September for potential news then.
It's also seemingly not coincidental the studio announced this today, the day of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain's 10th anniversary!

Something Cyberpunk 2077 flavoured is being teased for Thursday...
Image credit: CD ProjektThe Cyberpunk 2077 lot have popped a rather mysterious post on social media from President Rosalind Myers, teasing something for 4th September.
"Our great nation is once again facing a mounting cybersecurity threat - from those who hide in the shadows, too cowardly to publicly proclaim their beliefs, who are viciously determined to tear down our flag and the values it upholds," the post reads. "I will not accept this, and I know you won't either."
Some have speculated a new game plus mode for Cyberpunk 2077, or more content for Phantom Liberty. Only a few days to go until we find out!
- The Cyberpunk 2077 team is seeking "brave netrunners" for something on 4th September, but won't say what it is
mattevansc3 says: @2much I’m no longer allowed to play Crusaders King after my pregnant wife asked what I was doing and I explained to her that I’m a king and I was trying to get my wife to kill my firstborn son so that my second son could be my heir.
As we wrap up the blog for the day, we'll leave you with this sobering thought from Matt. Good evening all! See you in the morning.
