Sony has announced that 50 million PSP units have now been sold around the world.

That includes 9 million handhelds shifted since August last year.

It's taken PSP just over four years to reach the 50 million mark. The handheld launched in Japan on 12th December 2004, with a US launch following on 24th March the following year. PSP arrived in Europe on 1st September 2005.

Sony's machine still has a way to go when it comes to catching up with the DS. Back in December, Nintendo's financial report revealed that 96 million DS units have been sold worldwide.
