Former Marathon director settles lawsuit against Sony and Bungie, following his firing over alleged inappropriate messages to female staff
Former Marathon director Christopher Barrett has settled his lawsuit against Sony and Bungie. He filed the lawsuit against the studio after a quiet departure which was confirmed in March 2024.
Bloomberg reported in August 2024 that Barrett had been fired after he was accused by several female Bungie staff of inappropriate behaviour. Barrett subsequently sued Sony and Bungie for breach of contract and defamation, claiming that the real reason he was fired was to prevent him being paid a bonus of over $45 million, with the suit seeing Sony reveal some of the inappropriate text messages Barret allegedly sent to staff.
Now, the former director has said in posts on X and Linkedin that the two sides have settled their legal battle. "I am pleased to share that Sony, Bungie, and I have reached an agreement to resolve the lawsuit," Barrett wrote. "The outcome is one I am very satisfied with, and I am grateful to everyone who stood by me. Closing this chapter allows me to focus my attention on what’s next in my gaming journey, and I look forward to what lies ahead."
He also shared a joint statement put together by the parties as part of the settlement. "The litigation between Sony Interactive Entertainment, Bungie, and Christopher Barrett has been settled," it read. "For 25 years, Mr. Barrett contributed to some of Bungie’s most successful games. Mr. Barrett was the original game director for Marathon, and his name has been added to the game’s credits to reflect that."
Neither party disclosed if there was a finanial award as part of the settlement.
News of it comes not long after Bungie laid off at least 292 people late last month, having decided to pull the plug on continuing to develop new additions for Destiny 2.
