Fable's delay into 2027 is the right move, but it'll make looking through the window bars at GTA 6 on consoles slightly more painful
Ah, the Fable reboot isn't coming out in 2026 after all, then. Rumours had suggested the wind was blowing in that direction and Xbox exec Matt Booty chose to interrupt last Friday's chill vibes to confirm that a delay to February 2027's now been set in stone, ripping the plaster off ahead of the impending Summer Geoff Fest. While almost certainly a shrewd move on Playground Games' part, Fable's slip from the autumn slate still sucks if you're, say, on the platform this November's flashiest arrival isn't hitting yet.
Yep, won't someone think of us poor PC players, I lamented as I came into work this fine morning and went about dissecting what Fable's latest slip means in practical terms. The short answer is that one potential distraction from the inevitable wall of noise around GTA 6's console release on November 19th is now gone. While making sure to name-drop all of the Xbox adjacent games which have been or will be arriving this year, Booty's delay announcement via the Xbox podcast basically made no secret of which game Fable's dodging with this move.
"We talked about Forza Horizon 6 and how the team at Playground is doing really well," he said. "Also doing really well on Fable. The game is in great shape. The team feels really good. We're excited about where the game is. We want to make sure that that game has a window all to its own, so we are going to move it from this fall to February. And again, we really just want it to have its own moment to shine."
We know this stings, but it won’t be much longer before you’re back in Albion making morally questionable decisions.
We’ll be sharing some big Fable reveals @XBOX Showcase on June 7th, so be sure to tune in.#Fable #FableTheGame https://t.co/eyEQOGCn4w
The timing, especially with Booty confirming more of Fable will be shown at Xbox's summer showcase on June 7th, very much smacks of waiting to make sure GTA 6 didn't suffer another delay this spring, then putting plans in place to slot in after it. Given the amount of console oxygen GTA 6 will take up, it's a no brainer. It'd be even more of a no brainer if Rockstar's crime sim was coming to PC at launch as well, but we can't have that, can we? Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick and co are determined to make folks on our side of the fence wait.
Given that, it might've been cool to see whether Fable could've made at least some fight of it in autumn with its PC presence as a key weapon working in its favour. On the other hand, those are the sorts of bets companies understandably won't fancy making, not to mention the fact Playground Games' RPG will also haemorrhage some potential sales due to the BDS movement's ongoing boycott of parent company Microsoft over the tech giant's ties to the Israeli military.
So, early next year it is, and us PC players will have to look for other games to be digging into while GTA 6 arrives on the other game boxes. As much as Grand Theft feels like it's scrambled this year's release schedule - see the fact about 500 noteworthy games (including some we simply lacked the capacity to take on editorially) came out in May to give themselves a nice summer runway - there'll inevitably still be cool new stuff to try once the leaves start to turn brown. Maybe I'll have to find a way to make my initial Blood of Dawnwalker playthrough last about three to four months.
