Gao Changgong’s Backstory
Gao Changgong, Prince of Lanling, stood among Northern Qi’s greatest generals, famed for striking looks, fearless valor, and deep regard for his troops.
At the Battle of Mount Mang, 200,000 Northern Zhou soldiers besieged Luoyang. With the city near collapse, Gao charged in with just 500 cavalry, wearing a demon mask to hide his beauty. He cut through enemy lines to the gates but was soon surrounded.
Removing the mask, he revealed his identity; defenders’ morale surged, they sallied out to join him, and the Zhou army broke in rout. To honor this feat, soldiers composed the timeless anthem “The song of the Prince of Lanling entering the battle camp,” cementing his legend.
Though he won countless victories and the people’s love, imperial jealousy cut his life short. Yet his heroic tale endures, stirring Northern Qi’s spirit against every foe.
