AFK Arena Sonja Guide: Skills

Gold Roses

AFK Arena Sonja gifts all allied heroes a Gold Rose. Allies with a Gold Rose receive 50% less damage the following 5 times they are dealt damage. The attacking source loses health equal to 80% of Sonja’s Attack Rating. If an ally already has a Gold Rose, the number of times it is effective is reset. Each Gold Rose can reduce damage up to 5 times. At skill level 81, allies with a Gold Rose receive 60% less damage the following 5 times. At skill level 161, the attacking source loses health equal to 90% of Sonja’s Attack Rating.

Glimmering Brilliance

When AFK Arena Sonja enters Glimmering Brilliance, she stops using normal attacks and periodically recovers Energy. Outside of this state, she takes reduced damage and causes attackers to lose health based on her Attack Rating (triggered once per second). She first enters Glimmering Brilliance when her health drops below 60%, lasting 25 seconds. While in this state, she regenerates health per second based on the number of Roses on the battlefield, with healing and damage reduction increasing at higher skill levels.

Dark Vines

AFK Arena Sonja places a Black Rose where the most injured enemy is located, that deals 180% of Sonja’s Attack Rating as AoE damage to nearby enemies. After the Black Rose deals damage 3 times, the most injured ally receives a shield that exists for 8 seconds which has a value equal to the damage dealt by the Black Rose, or at least 220% of Sonja’s Attack Rating. At skill level 121, the Black Rose deals 180% of Sonja’s Attack Rating as AoE damage to nearby enemies. At skill level 201, the Black Rose deals 220% of Sonja’s Attack Rating as AoE damage to nearby enemies.

Blood Rose

AFK Arena Sonja gifts the most injured enemy hero a Red Rose that causes them to additionally lose health equal to 70% of Sonja’s Attack Rating for the following 5 times they suffer damage, after which Sonja reclaims the Red Rose. When Sonja reclaims the Red Rose, if the enemy is still alive, they shall lose 8% of their max health, but this value cannot exceed 240% of Sonja’s Attack Rating value, meanwhile Sonja shall recover an amount of health equal to that lost by the enemy.

If AFK Arena Sonja is in a state of Glimmering Brilliance, the amount of health she recovers from this skill is multiplied 2 times. This skill prioritizes enemies that have yet to possess a Red Rose. At skill level 141, enemies additionally lose health equal to 90% of Sonja’s Attack Rating for the following 5 times they suffer damage. At skill level 221, if the enemy is still alive, they shall lose 8% of their max health, but this value cannot exceed 240% of Sonja’s Attack Rating value.

AFK Arena Sonja Guide: Signature Item

Item: The Rose

A cane made of pure gold. The thistles and thorns covering it are filled with the blood of slaves, which intertwine as they ascend to the gold rose situated on the top. When protection is betrayed, all that remains beneath the rose is death and sin.

Skill: Thorned Aura

[+10 Unlocks] The Thorned Aura allows the ally using it to recover health equal to 100% of AFK Arena Sonja’s Attack Rating every second. Every time the Thorned Aura deals damage, the ally using it recovers an additional 60% of the damage dealt.

[+20 Unlocks] Allies with Thorned Auras deal 130% of AFK Arena Sonja’s Attack Rating as AoE damage every second to nearby enemies.

[+30 Unlocks] When 2 or more enemies are within the range of the Thorned Aura, the amount of health the ally using it recovers is increased by 80%.

Signature Item Recommendation: +30

Sonja’s Signature Item should be at +30. Although it suits her kit, her kit is so slow, and she dies so fast in higher level deficits that investing into her at all right now is not recommended. Looking at the meta, this hero will not play any significant role towards late- or endgame, so save up the emblems. Getting +1 to unlock the skill is an option, but that’s it.

AFK Arena Sonja Guide: Furniture set Bonuses

Thorned Furor

AFK Arena Sonja’s Furniture abilities provide additional utility but do not significantly improve her overall effectiveness. With 3/9 Mythic Pieces, whenever an ally with a Gold Rose is affected by an enemy Control Effect, the Gold Rose duration is extended once, with a cooldown of 5 seconds per ally. At 9/9 Mythic Pieces, the three backline allies automatically receive Gold Roses at the start of battle, each usable up to three times. However, despite these effects, Sonja’s overall kit lacks impact, making Furniture investment not recommended as it does not sufficiently enhance her viability in challenging battles.

AFK Arena Sonja Guide: Engravings

Sonja’s Engravings provide improvements to her support and survivability, but investment should be carefully considered due to her overall performance limitations. Minimal investment is not necessary, but E30 is recommended as it enhances her Dark Vines ability, allowing Sonja and the most injured ally to receive a shield equal to the damage dealt by Black Rose, improving her durability and team support. E60 further enhances her Blood Rose ability, allowing the two most injured allies to receive a Red Rose, which increases their sustain. While E30 provides a notable improvement to Sonja’s shielding capabilities, further investment to E60 offers only minor benefits. Given her overall kit limitations, engraving beyond E30 may not be the best use of resources.

AFK Arena Sonja Guide: Artifacts

For AFK Arena Sonja, the recommended collection is Spell Bondage Skill Level 1, as going beyond this level requires sacrificing more valuable stats. Full ATK is the most important offensive stat for her collection item, ensuring she maximizes her damage output and effectiveness. On the defensive side, DMG Resist is the key stat to prioritize, improving her survivability in battle.

As an alternative artifact, the Waistband of Resilience can be a viable option for players who have not yet progressed far enough to access collections from the Ghoulish Gallery. However, collections are crucial for long-term progression, making them a necessary investment for late-game content. The Waistband of Resilience is more suitable for early-game players or as a temporary backup if the recommended collection is unavailable.

AFK Arena Sonja Guide: Tier List

Sonja’s effectiveness varies across different game modes. She ranks C in Campaign, Nightmare Corridor, and Cursed Realm, indicating limited viability in these areas. However, she performs well in the Tower, where she holds an S-tier ranking due to her tanking and buffing capabilities in specific situations.

In the current meta, Sonja does not play a significant role in late- or end-game content. Her slow ability execution and low survivability in high-level deficits make her an unreliable choice for competitive play. While she has some use in Tower stages, her overall impact remains limited, and other heroes outperform her in most game modes.

AFK Arena Sonja Guide: Lore

Sonja was once a different person, but after Nara’s disappearance, she became ruthless and unwavering. Bargaining with her is futile, and dissent is met with immediate scrutiny. Though she presents herself with grace and refinement, beneath her elegant appearance lies a predator with a sharp mind and an even sharper sense of control. Her golden cane, often stained with fresh blood, serves as a chilling reminder of her true nature.

Sonja and Nara believed that the only way to fight fate was to be crueler than fate itself. Together, they built their gang, the Whispers, using a mix of deception, violence, and manipulation, gathering the most ruthless individuals from every faction. While Sonja never shared Nara’s thirst for blood, she opposed Nara’s decision to turn against her own family. However, after Nara vanished, Sonja’s last shreds of morality crumbled.

What was once a means to survive became an addiction controlling life and death gave her an intoxicating sense of power. The Whispers were founded with the intent of giving orphans and outcasts of Rustport a chance to thrive, a family of their own, but over time, Sonja’s vision became something far more dangerous.

As the Whispers grew, Sonja sought to elevate them above the other Rustport gangs. She initially hesitated to deal harshly with traitors, favoring exile over execution. But after Nara’s disappearance, she abandoned any mercy, ruthlessly eliminating anyone who threatened the organization. Her relentless screening process left no room for betrayal, and soon, all of Rustport feared her name. Those she once sought to protect became mere pawns, required to sacrifice everything for the privilege of survival.

Now, Sonja reigns over the Whispers with absolute control. She no longer needs to dirty her own hands her very presence is enough to command loyalty and instill fear. Like an iron rose blooming among thorns, she has crushed countless traitors beneath her feet, forsaking any remnants of goodwill in her relentless pursuit of power.

AFK Arena Sonja Guide: Conclusion

Sonja, an agility-based tank and buffer from the Lightbearer faction, is often described as an iron rose blooming among thorns. Her abilities focus on gifting roses that reduce damage for allies and inflict harm on enemies, but her slow execution and fragile survivability at high-level deficits limit her overall impact.

Heavy investment in Sonja is not recommended. Her signature item should be at +30, while further furniture upgrades beyond -/9 and extensive engravings offer little benefit. Her tier list rankings vary, performing C-tier in Campaign, Nightmare Corridor, and Cursed Realm, but standing out with an S-tier ranking in the Tower due to her niche effectiveness.

In her lore, Sonja undergoes a transformation into a ruthless leader of the Whispers after Nara’s disappearance. Once opposed to excessive violence, she now rules through fear and control, wielding absolute power over life and death.

For artifacts and collections, the ideal choice is Spell Bondage Skill Level 1, prioritizing Full ATK for offense and DMG Resist for defense. Early-game players can consider Waistband of Resilience as an alternative.

While Sonja’s backstory is compelling, her gameplay remains underwhelming in the current meta. Compared to stronger alternatives, investing in her may not provide the best returns.
