Trade through barter has been a major component of PoE and Path of Exile 2 has expanded the scope through several new resources and more official support. You can still trade with other players the “old way”, but it’s a good idea to become familiar with the new trade systems as well, most notably the Currency Exchange through the game’s interface. We’ll go through all the trade options in PoE2 to help you make the best choices.

How does trade work in Path of Exile 2?

Players have several ways to conduct trade in Path of Exile 2. You can trade nearly every conceivable item and currency in the game. It bears mentioning that trading with NPC vendors is not considered “trade” by the community – this term largely refers to trading between players. You can trade through the following methods:

  • PoE2 Currency Exchange
  • Player barter (direct trading)
  • Trade websites

How to use Currency Exchange

As the name implies, this new PoE2 function (though a version of it premiered in the Settlers of Kalgur PoE league) lets you list currencies for exchange with other players, using the auction system. In Early Access, this system becomes available once you’ve completed the campaign on Normal difficulty and begin Act 1 Cruel. You can exchange anything “stackable” that would mark it as currency, including:

  • Crafting items (Orbs of Transmutation, Chaos Orbs, Exalted Orbs, etc)
  • Runes
  • Soul Cores
  • Essences
  • Omens
  • Catalysts

You can’t list gear, crafted, and non-stackable items. This includes Jewels, Uniques, and more. Here’s how the Currency Exchange works:

Select the items you want in the “I Want” field, then the items you offer in the “I Have” field. Then, set up the trade ratio that you propose in the fields next to the two offers. This way, you can set up a full stack of an item, or just a fraction – it’s up to you. Now you’re ready to list the offer. There’s also a nominal listing fee that you pay in Gold. The amount you have to pay scales with the volume of items you’re looking to trade.

When done, players will be able to see your listed offers and if interested will accept the trade for the items you’re looking for. You will be notified of any successful auctions upon completion and get your items to your stash.

How to trade directly through barter

You can also barter with other players the old-fashioned way through direct trade. Path of Exile 2 has a dedicated trading chat channel, where you can list items you’re looking to offload, or where you can inquire about what you’re looking for.

Once you get in contact with someone you want to exchange goods with, you can join a party together and meet (usually at one’s hideout). Right-click their party icon and select Trade. This will open a window where you can drag your respective offers which you both then have to “Accept”. If you’re not trading item for item (such as gear), the most common currencies to use as “cash” are Chaos Orbs, Divine Orbs, and Exalted Orbs. In the rarest of cases, players might trade an amazing, top-tier item for a Mirror of Kalandra, the rarest and most prized currency in the game.

✓ Public stash tabs

For use in direct and website trades, players can set up some of their stash tabs as “Public”. This will let players browse the items there and are generally considered to be “for trade”. That’s a good way of advertising something you want to trade. You can right-click on the item you added and set up what you’re looking to get for it.

How to use trade websites

There are several reputable PoE trade websites that make direct trading much easier. Essentially, they scan players’ public stash tabs and facilitate trade between them if there’s a buyer who agrees with the listed price. The trades have to be done directly, however – the sites can only connect the two traders and help them join a party together, but the direct trade has to go down as we described above.

Using these websites, you can set up granular filters for the exact item you’re looking for, down to implicit stats, affixes, item level, and more. The official trade website is PoE Trade, while there’s also a fan-made version called PoE Exchange.
