As Henry gets closer to securing an invitation to the wedding party, he’ll get wrapped up in blacksmith Radovan’s boastful bragging. To help out the blacksmith, you’re tasked with tracking down some high-quality Damascus steel so that he can complete the wedding order. But, the Trosky Region is light on the rare material, forcing you to track down a hermit, the owner of a sword from Andalusia, and get to the bottom of a string of apparitions.

It’s said the hermit sold his soul to the devil, so there might be something in there to help you get the sword. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to complete The Hermit side quest in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.

How to find out the truth about the devil

As soon as you’ve spoken to Radovan after The Jaunt quest, head over to Troskowitz, talk to the Innkeeper Betty (she’s usually in and around the tavern), and ask about the hermit. Choose the ‘what do you know about the apparition?’ dialogue option and Betty will explain the herdboys came running into the village terrified, saying he’d seen a rider from hell.

The rider was sighted again near a conciliatory stone and it was displaced the next time, suggesting some devilry is afoot. Next, ask who saw the apparition by the cross to learn that it was the apothecary’s wife, Gerda. Lastly, ask where to find Stanislav, the herdboy.

From here, you have three tasks to complete before heading off to find the hermit:

  • Talk to Gerda in Troskowitz
  • Investigate the cross to the west of Troskowitz
  • Talk to Stanislav in Appolonia

Gerda hangs around the apothecary shop in Troskowitz, either in the garden or in the living quarters below the shop. Ask her what she saw at the cross. She’ll be reluctant to share what happened. You’ll then have the option to convince her or even pay her for the details. Use your highest stat for the best result and it’s best to avoid intimidation if you value your reputation in the village. She explains that she was picking marsh mallow roots by the rocks near the road to Tachov. The apparition appeared from the very ground, dark and ominous. She then spotted a dark figure in the field darting towards Apollonia.

Next, head to the cross marker on the map to the west of Troskowitz. Dig up the grave using a shovel (you can get a spade from the trader in Troskowitz if needed), then open the sack to find several books, a Crusaders of the Red Star Waffenrock, and old Letter about the order’s commandery fire, some Groschen, and a Crusader Cloak. Grab it all.

Lastly, head over to Stanislav just south of the Apollonia fast travel spot and speak to the herdboy. Ask him about the apparition and he’ll unsurprisingly not want to share much. You can then use a skill check, pay him, or give him a swig of schnapps to loosen his tongue. Turns out he saw a rider on a black horse flying into Apollonia in the dead of night.

Explore Apollonia

Completing all three tasks will unlock a new optional objective – Explore Apollonia. Head to the area marked on the map. You’ll want to make your way just northwest of the H objective marker where you’ll find an old barn and a pen. Check the image above for the exact spot.

Inside the pen is a black horse. Look at the horse then hop into the pen and examine the horse, which is called Vranik. So, putting two and two together, it appears someone did visit the Hermit, though it definitely wasn’t an apparition or the devil.

How to get the hermit’s sword

Make your way over to the hermit’s hovel just northwest of the pen. Follow the stream up from the road, then follow the path up into the rocks at the top of the hill. When you reach the first clearing, take a left and follow a small path along the hill edge to find the hut. Check the image above for the exact location of the hovel. The hermit, Ambrose, is in the hut.

Select the dialogue option that inquires about what he’s been up to, then share the evidence with the hermit – the conciliatory cross stash, the charters of the order of knights, and the black horse. Then, press for more information. Turns out the hermit isn’t Ambrose, who died a while back, but Konrad, Knight of the Cross with the Red Star. Turns out he was the diabolical horseman seen by the villagers as he searched for Ambrose’s hovel and dug up the stash to help the hermit settle his affairs.

Konrad will then ask you to help with one last task: bring a cross and a message of forgiveness to Margaret in Troskowitz. This starts the A Sinful Soul task.

Bring the message of forgiveness to the widow

Head back to Troskowitz and talk to Margaret. She’s often found in Troskowitz Cemetery, so look there if you can’t find her in the village. Hand over the cross. Agree to help her give Jan, Ambrose’s brother, a proper burial. Go over to the rose bush outside the cemetery walls and rob the grave to get Jan remains. Dig a grave and place the remains inside.

Return to hermit and get the sword

Make your way back to the hermit’s hovel. There’s a mighty commotion going on with an injured knight and several others on the path to the hut. Approach the hut and convince Konrad to talk to you. The sword is on a grave between two entangled birch trees. At this point, you can choose to help or save Konrad. The choice is yours.

Either way, after the fight, head up the hill to the edge of the meadow. Look for the birch trees entangled at their roots to find the grave. Check the map image above for the exact location. Grab the sword on the grave and bring it back to the blacksmith in Tachov. You’ll then need to forge The Hermit’s Sword into the Toledo Steel Sword yourself and hand it over to Radovan. This will wrap up The Hermit side quest in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.
