But no matter what your weapon of choice is, you want to make sure you’ve got the highest-quality weapons you can to deal maximum damage – that’s where Legendary weapons come in. The cream of the crop, Legendary weapons hit harder than any other quality, and finding one in-game could be exactly what you need to pick up a win. So if you’re struggling to find any in your games, we’ve made a quick guide to explain what they are and how you can hunt them down for yourself.
How to find Legendary weapons in Fortnite
You can come across Legendary weapons by looting chests, but it’s pretty rare to get them this way, with Uncommon, Rare and Epic weapons being much more common. Instead, there are a couple of other things you can do to have a higher chance of finding some Legendary weapons. The two best methods for consistently getting Legendary weapons in Fortnite are:
- Using keys on special chests
- Upgrading your weapons to the legendary rarity
Use keys on special chests
You can pick up keys in Fortnite that allow you to open special locked chests dotted around the map. These will typically have a few weapons for you to choose from, and while they won’t always have a Legendary weapon on offer, they are significantly more likely to have one than the regular chests you find while exploring. If you’re looking for some of these chests, good places to check are near gas stations and on the lowest floors of multi-storey buildings.
Upgrade your weapons
In the second method, you should be ready to spend some Gold Bars, as they’ll be required to upgrade lower rarity weapons up to Legendary. Look for benches on your mini-map, which are marked with an arrow pointing upwards. At any of these benches, you can spend some Gold bars to upgrade your Epic weapons into Legendary weapons. You can upgrade a Common weapon into an Uncommon, Rare, Epic and then Legendary if you wanted to, but this would cost a fair number of Gold Bars, so it’s best to just stick to upgrading any Rare or Epic weapons to save in the long run.
Don’t forget, you’re not the only person who can get Legendary weapons. There’s always a chance that players you kill might drop one, so always be sure to check the drops you get just in case there’s something special waiting for you.
Fortnite weapon rarity explained
Since Epic Games has made so many changes to the weapon list in recent seasons, you might be a bit confused about what weapon tiers are and what they mean. There are now more than 10 weapons in many different categories in the game, so here’s a quick explainer of what each tier and colour mean:
Weapon rarity tierColourCommonGreyUncommonGreenRareBlueEpicPurpleLegendaryOrangeMythicGoldenExoticTeal It’s not just weapons, but all items in Fortnite have rarities too. Image captured by VideoGamerFrom Common up to Legendary, each tier means the weapon is more powerful than the tier below. That means Uncommon is stronger than Common, Rare stronger than Uncommon, and so on. Mythic and Exotic weapons are unique, in that while they are incredibly strong, they usually come with unique modifiers that might make them incredibly powerful or terrible to use depending on your playstyle.
✓ Use what you knowUse weapons you’re comfortable with. If you’re a pro with an SMG and rubbish with sniper rifles, then an Epic or even Rare SMG is worth more to you than a Legendary sniper rifle – play to your strengths!
Essentially, all you really need to know is that Legendary, Mythic and Exotic weapons tend to be the best weapons available, and if you come across any of them in-game, you should prioritise using these over other rarities.
