As you explore feudal Japan in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you’ll amass dozens of wardrobes’ worth of gear, all with there own unique visual identity and flair. As you graduate to higher stat equipment, you might think you’ll have to naturally wave goodbye to styles and looks of lesser gear. But, that’s not the case, thanks to Ubisoft implementing a robust transmog system, or Visual Customization as it’s called in Shadows.
If you’ve found a new weapon, headgear, or armor with excellent stats and plan on upgrading it but it has visuals that leave a little to be desired, you can port in the look of another piece of equipment. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to transmog in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

To transmog, you’ll first need to bring up the pause menu (touch pad on PS5 or i on PC) then navigate to the Inventory tab along the top of the screen. Once there, select the gear type you want to change then tap triangle on PS5 or X on PC to bring up the Visual Customization menu. Note that this one works for weapons, armor, headgear, your horse, and trinkets.
You’ll then see all the visuals you’ve accumulated so far. Select the one you like and tap change (X on PS5 or Spacebar on PC). This will then swap out the look of the weapon or gear you have equipped for the one you’ve selected in the Visual Customization menu while maintaining the equipped item’s stats, abilities, and passives. It’s a useful option if you’ve grown attached to the visuals of a specific weapon but it doesn’t quite cut it in terms of stats.
You can pick up new visuals from gear obtained from weapon and gear loot in chests out in the open world at points of interest like shrines and castles. You’ll also get new ones as rewards for completing quests and activities. Lastly, you can buy new visuals from Ornament Vendors and Gear Vendors in major settlements like Sakai in the starting Izumi Settsu region.
