The Greatsword is the primary melee weapon for DPS players in Throne and Liberty. The weapon is all about heavy attack, offering doble damage proc autos as a result, Furthermore, the class has long skill cooldowns, meaning that players shall expect to see larger burst windows, rather than sustained DPS. So, if you like the idea of that build here’s everything you need to know to get started with the Greatsword builds in Throne and Liberty. The guide is broken into a section on skills, followed by passive, then weapons and gear, stats and attributes.

Greatsword Build for Throne and Liberty

To get you started, here are the Greatsword skills you  typically want to use

  1. Ascending Slash – 320% + 54 damage skill. There’s an 80% chance to apply the conditions Prone for 2.5 seconds to enemies if they are already Bound, Sleeping or Stunned. Heavy Attacks increase the duration by 1 second.
  2. DaVinci’s Courage – group buff that provides bonus health, defences and attack speed for 12 seconds.
  3. Death Blow – Deals damage equal to 530% of Base Damage + 181 against Bound, Sleeping, Shocked, or Stunned Targets.
  4. Guillotine Blade – Special Growth Skill unlocked at 50. This deals 750% base damage or 975% if the target is Prone or shocked. The skill also weakens the target which decreases healing received.
  5. Precision Dash –  Charge towards a target, dealing 110% base damage and further increasing heavy attack chance on all weapon attack types by 160 for 3 seconds.
  6. Stunning Blow – Deals damage and has a high chance to stun for 3 seconds. Targets immune to stuns are instead Shocked for 8 seconds. Successful heavy attacks increase the stun duration and shock duration.

The idea behind the build is that you charge to your target, and use Stunning Blow to Stun or Shock an enemy with a hopeful heavy attack hit. From there, you follow it with a Death Blow, then Ascending into Guillotine Blade. There’s some luck involved with Heavy Attacks and CC triggering, but, if they line up, your basic rotation slams for very strong burst damage. You can swamp out a skill or two if you need to AOE with skills like Devastating Tornado or Gaia Crash. This build is great for both single-target bossing and in PvP, as you offer a very strong burst. In PvP you pop everything, hope to one-shot someone, then get out of there and wait for your CDs to come back up before picking off another target.

We’ve left some room here, as you need a weapon combo. Typically, this depends on your role. DPS players ideally want to use Daggers, while tank players want Sword and Shield. You can use a bow for levelling and farming if you want as there’s some synergy. Players can even use a staff for open-world farming too. But, the Dagger is the main build for Greatsword players.

Daggers are strong weapons to pair, as they grant increased crit damage with their passives, and you get better crit damage. When your Greastsword skills are on cooldown, you then use your daggers to fill in DPS. Here you can get poison on your attacks and hit them with other AOE-type spells.

With the passives, you get an increased crit chance against poisoned targets, which is handy for further spiking your damage with heavy attacks and your long cooldown skills listed above. Therefore, you want to use Inject Venom to easily apply poison, alongside Shadow Strike for a movement skill that applies poison. You can take this over Precision Dash to get more damage skills on your bar. Anckle Strike also pairs well with your CC effects from your Greatsword skills. Brutal Incision is a execute skill, with a high crit hit chance and damage buffs on targets below 50% HP. PvP players also need the Camouflage Cloak skill on their bar.

If you are tanking take the Sword and Shield, and opt for skills that taunt enemies, alongside increasing your defensiveness. Players can also use a longbow for some added range harassment, and CC setup with Bound tools. However, they don’t flatter each other too well outside of crit buffs to bound targets with your melee skills.

Greatsword passives build

Passives are an important part of the build, as this is where you get synergy between your weapons. These are the passives you want to use.

The first skill used during the effect does not consume mana.

As you can see, the build is all about granting you a bonus way to crit to spike your burst from Heavy attacks and your high-damage skills. It also tries to help you get better CC on your targets so your skills get the combos they need per the damage bonuses conditions mentioned in the skills above.

Gear and Stats

Gearing is an important part of Greatsword builds. The Greatsword suffers at level 50 till it gets gear. And then it scales very hard. T1 items are your main grind as this gear is acquired via the usual guild content and end-game dungeons. This is what you are aiming for at launch at a minimum. This is why we rate the Greatsword the way we do on our Throne and Liberty weapon tier list.

For the most part, you want to roll these stats on weapons:

  • Crit
  • Heavy Attack Chance
  • Stun Chance on your gear.

These give you the most synergy with your DPS and Greatsword skills. You also want to get the Magnaduke’s Berserk Blade for its perk of increased heavy attack after stunning a target for 6 seconds. In the meantime, Morokai’s Corrupt Sword is fine. Tanking players can use the Magna Duke Taunting Blade for its provoke taunt effect.

In PvP, players want to use the Tevant’s Massacre Blade for the invisibility cloak for their dagger. Lequirus’ Thorny Edge is the other dagger you want in PvE. That’s because you get the perk that increases base damage when using a Dagger mobility skill, aka Shadow Strike for poison and movement setup on your target.

As for your armour, it depends on the content you’re doing. Cooldown and Wisdom is nice since you have long CDs. Evasion is good for PvP to avoid attacks from certain weapon types Endurance makes it easier to land attacks against enemies using weapon types. General stats like health, recovery, and skill damage are also nice for both PvE and PvP.

As for your attributes, they work as follows:

  • Strength – Increases defence against melee, ranged and magical attacks.
  • Dexterity – Damage increase for your weapons
  • Wisdom – Increases mana, mana regen and cooldown reduction.
  • Perception: increases hit rating.

Ideally, you should be looking for an attribute spread of 50 for Dex, Strength and Perception. That way you get good defensiveness, increased power, and can land as many hits as possible. Ignore Wisdom when possible as mana is not so much an issue with the playstyle. A small amount mana or Wissom on gear and party buffs should suffice.

With that settled, that’s the basics of the Greatswords build covered for Throne and Liberty. and get you started for the open beta and global launch.
