From a regular Pistol to a Shotgun or even the famed Magnum, you've got a fairly wide selection of guns to pick from, but they'll all need ammo.

Each type of gun, bow, and crossbow has a particular type of ammo that goes with it, several of which overlap. That means you'll need a pretty large stock of ammo if you plan to use multiple ranged weapon types, especially for certain guns.

How To Craft Ammo

You'll first need to get yourself a Forge to start crafting ammo, which is where most of the bullet recipes are, but you have to craft and assemble several pieces tomake a full bullet: Bullet Tips, Bullet Casings, and Gunpowder.

Almost every type of ammo can be purchased from a trader, but Trader Hugh is more likely to carry a wider variety as he specializes in Ammo and Weapons.

Both Bullet Casings and Tips, as well as Gunpowder, are all used to make three different types of ammo:

You can increase the number of bullets, bullet pieces, and other gun-archetype-specific parts you find in loot by investing in their associated crafting magazines, such as Handgun Magazines for handguns or Shotgun Weekly for shotguns.

How To Make Bullet Tips And Bullet Casings

For both Bullet Tips and Bullet Casings, smelt down some Brass, Lead, and Clay inside the Forge, then look at the Ammo/Weapons tab.

The Clay Soil can be obtained by digging up the ground with any type of shovel, but both Brass and Lead are most often found via looting and scraping items.

You can also get around 40 Brass when breaking down doors if you've read the Wasteland Treasures Vol.5 skill book.

How To Make Gunpowder

With Gunpowder, your initial way of obtaining it will be buying or looting it until you've read at least 50 Forge Ahead skill books to unlock the Chemistry Station.

As far as looting it, Gunpowder is a rarer resource, and you'll find it more frequently inside Destroyed Chemistry Stations, different sizes of Destroyed Chemistry Sets, trash piles, any type of vehicle, and Shotgun Messiah crates.

If you do have a Chemistry Station, Gunpowder can be crafted with one Nitrate Power and one Coal per Gunpowder.

Nitrate Powder can be obtained from Nitrate Rocks, smashing purple or blue stacked bags inside different buildings, as well as trash piles and corpses, while the best way to get Coal is from the Burnt Forest.

While the text is generally faded, you can still check the labels on the bags to see what type of material it is before you break them.

How To Unlock Advanced Ammo Types

Each gun archetype – Shotgun, Rifle, Automatic, Pistol, Magnum, and Sniper – and the one for bows and crossbows, has a set of books that enhances and gives you perks for its type.

There are seven main volumes for eacharchetype, with specific ones giving you the ability to make an advanced type of ammo for that type of gun.

There's also a final eighth volume for all of them that gives you either afinal special perk, the ability to bulk-craft ammo, or both.

How To Craft Arrows And Bolts

Like bullets, you'll need to assemble pieces to make ammo for your Bows and Crossbows, but this time you'll need a type of Arrowhead for either ammo type, either Iron or Steel, as well as several other materials depending on which type you're making.

  • Arrows are used by Bows.
  • Bolts are used by Crossbows.

Feathers can be found inside Bird Nests, found randomly on the ground in every biome, or looted from trash piles, trashcans, and trash.

You canmake Iron or Steel Arrowheads from the Ammo/Weapons tab in the Forge. Both of these take smelted Iron and smelted Clay to make, but the Steel Arrowheads specifically need a Crucible to be crafted and require more materials.

  • Wood x1
  • Feathers x1

Flaming Arrows and Bolts

  • Steel Arrowheads x1

You can switch the ammo type your Bow or Crossbow is using by holding the Reload button.

How To Craft Shotgun Ammo

For shotguns, they have a similar method to other ammo crafting, but with some different parts and materials. Regular Shotgun Shells, the most common ammo type for Shotguns, need Buckshot and Paper as special ingredients.

  • Shotgun Shells are used by all types of Shotgun.

Buckshot is made at a Forge from smelted Lead, while Paper can be looted from things like trash and toilets, obtained when disassembling paper-based items like skill books, or breaking old magazines on the ground.

Other types of shotgun ammo, like Shotgun AP Slugs and Shotgun Breaching Slugs, have similar recipes to other bullets and also need specific skill book volumes to unlock.

Slug Type

Materials Needed

Shotgun AP Slugs

  • Bullet Tip x2
  • Gunpowder x5
  • Scrap Polymers x1

Shotgun Breaching Slugs

  • Forged Steel x3
  • Clay Soil x2
  • Gunpowder x44
  • Scrap Polymers x1

How To Craft Armor-Piercing And HiPower Ammo

Besides the base type of ammo, there are two different upgraded variants, each of which has its own particular use and also needs the Forge and the Workbench: Armor-Piercing and HiPower.

  • The Armor-Piercing variant of bullets deals increased damage to armor, such as that worn by Biker Zombies.
  • The HiPower variant of bullets deals increased base damage but requires more components and materials per bullet.

To be able to craft either of these ammo variants, you'll also need to read specific skill books to get their recipes, with each gun archetype getting a volume that unlocks either the Armor-Piercing or HiPower variants.

Both variants of ammo need the standard materials to craft regardless of the caliber or gun they go with – Bullet Tips, Bullet

Casings, and Gunpowder – the only difference is their recipes are more difficult to unlock, as they're a mid-to-late game ammo type.

Ammo Type

  • Bullet Casing x1
  • Gunpowder x5

7.62mm (AP)

How To Craft Rocket Launcher Ammo

For Rocket Launchers, their ammo isn't unlocked via the specialty skill books, but by just reading at least 45 of the normal skill magazine, Explosive Magazine.

They need some of the same materials as the different bullets, but both types need either the special Rocket Casing component, but only the Rocket HE needs the Rocket Tip.

  • Rocket Casings are made in the Forge from 62 smelted Iron and 37 smelted Clay.
  • Rocket Tips are made in the Forge from 62 smelted Lead and 37 smelted Clay.

Rocket Ammo Type

How To Craft Robotic Turret Ammo

In return for Robotic Turrets being a mid-to-late game acquisition and rather expensive to make, their ammo is cheapto craft, especially since they'll be going through a lot of it.

They have three types of ammo available they can use, one of which is unlocked initially, while the other two require specialty skill volumes like other advanced ammo types.
