As you sail through the different areas of Obelia Gulf in Ys X: Nordics, you'll find plenty of boss fights in the main story, each more difficult than the last. However, you might be surprised to learn that the most difficult battle in the game doesn't come in the main story, and is instead an optional one.

Vermodr Overview And Attack Pattern
You can already tell how difficult the Vermodr fight is going to be just by looking at its stats even on normal difficulty. It boasts a massive 384,653 HP, 975 STR, and 730 DEF. Apart from that, the boss has a durability bar from the beginning, which also gets regenerated thrice during the battle at specific HP thresholds.
If that wasn't enough, the boss also has various one-shot abilities and area denials to make your life harder. Some of these attacks might seem similar to the Misvarsomr boss, and here's what you can expect:
Attack Name
Description
Scream
You'll commonly see Vermodr scream loudly and push away both Adol and Karja. While these screams don't deal damage, you can parry them at the right time to build some revenge and prevent knockback.
Electric Ground Slam
This will be one of the most common attacks from this boss, and it's also an important one. In it, the boss raises its hands for a few seconds before slamming them on the ground with an electric shock.
If successful, this attack is followed by various lightning strikes that follow your character's movements. The catch is that you can prevent these strikes if you parry the first slam.
Small Rock Throw
If you're far away from the boss during any phase, it'll constantly hurl rocks at your location. While these are quite hard to parry, you can easily sidestep them.
Claw Attack
When you're close to the boss, it'll consistently claw at you with its hands while it recovers to perform a bigger attack.
Boulder Attack
Once you remove the first durability bar of Vermodr, it'll start pulling a massive boulder out of the ground and hurling it at your active character. If you're close to it, the first part of this attack can knock you back.
The best way to dodge this boulder is timing your parry, though you'll likely get one shot if you get hit by it.
Red Attack
Past the first durability bar, you'll also see Vermodr performing a red attack where it pulls out a giant hammer that it first swings across the ground and then slams it.
You can easily parry both these instances of attacks, and the second one triggers a special cutscene for the first parry.
Speed Attack
After the boss gains the second durability bar, it'll start performing a speed attack where it punches at your location and then summons lightning strikes from that spot going outward.
Black Orb
You might also see the boss summon a black orb that slowly moves to your location. This is easy to parry and can be a great source of revenge.
Random Strikes
Past the second durability bar, the boss will start spawning random lightning strikes with some of its attacks. These are less common in the beginning, but keep getting more intense as you lower Vermodr's HP.
How To Beat Vermodr
For most bosses in Ys X: Nordics, the idea is to learn their attack pattern and how to dodge their attacks while you deal damage. This is significantly easy since these bosses usually have only three to four attacks that they cycle through. However, the situation is entirely different in Vermodr's case.
Not only does this boss have a vast range of attacks, but it also executes them in quick succession. Moreover, with how high the boss' HP is, this becomes a battle of endurance and not simple skill. No matter how much you've upgraded your character, this boss will take you a good chunk of time to beat.
The durability bar being regenerated thrice after you remove it the first time is one of the main reasons for this.
The most important thing in this battle is to bring everything that helps you get rid of Vermodr's durability as fast as possible. This includes having one of your characters entirely built on Break, having multiple Break-heavy skills on that character and in the duo skills, and trying to apply Frostbite on the enemy.
Frostbite allows you to deal double damage to the boss' durability and HP, which is the saving grace for this battle. Apart from that, you'd also want to stack up on a ton of liquid medicine to heal and revive while also having a bunch of Paralysis-removal solid medicine. You can't avoid all the lightning strikes later in the fight, so these items are important.
