Phil Spencer Says That Xbox Will Adapt More Franchises As A Minecraft Movie Crosses $500 Million At The Box Office

Summary
- Minecraft Movie and the Fallout television series have given Xbox the confidence to keep pursuing adaptations.
- Phil Spencer assures fans there is more to come on the adaptation front.
- Doom: The Dark Ages, The Outer Worlds 2 and other unannounced titles are still on the way from Xbox.
A Minecraft Movie is an unlikely box office hero, considering the negative sentiment surrounding the movie before its release. Despite being critically panned, A Minecraft Movie has amassed over $550 million at the box office since it entered theatres two weeks ago.
In an interview with Variety, Xbox head Phil Spencer said the success of A Minecraft Movie and the award-winning Fallout television series has given him more confidence in pursuing future adaptations.
More to Come
"I think we learn something through our creative processes every time we find a good partner who has their point of view on how different parts of the story can be told," Spencer began. "I'll go all the way back to Halo. We learned from doing Halo, we learn from doing Fallout. All of these build on themselves and we'll have, obviously, a couple that miss, it's just kind of part of it."
Halo on Paramount+ was cancelled after two seasons. The show was often criticised for its excessive deviation from the source material. The second season was a massive improvement over the first but ultimately couldn't save the show.
"But I think what I'd say to the community that likes this work is, you're going to see more, because we're gaining confidence, and we're learning through this," Spencer continued. "That's why it's hard for me to tease any specific thing, because while I know all of these things are in the creative process, I want to give them time, and I don't to put any undue pressure on them. I like the stories that our teams are writing now, and the games that they're launching. There's just a lot of interest from traditional media, and we're happy about that."
On the gaming front, Spencer has confirmed there are unannounced titles he's not ready to announce yet. An unannounced remake of Oblivion that's releasing next week, perhaps? The Outer Worlds 2 and Doom: The Dark Ages are two first-party titles set to release in the coming year.
Fallout's second season has commenced filming and is expected to release in the first half of 2026, though no release date has been announced yet.
