Not every video game gets to have its moment in the spotlight. Its chance to be in the hands of players everywhere, to be showered with acclaim and attention. When a video game launches in a less-than-desirable state, the result is often rejection and criticism.

There are, however, some video games that get a second, or a third chance to shine. Thanks to modern methods of video game development, certain games continue to get worked on well after their initial launch. That means they change, evolve, and advance, becoming bigger and better than they first were. And some of those games make big comebacks.

8 Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege

Rainbow Six: Siege launched to mostly positive reviews, and it sold well. It was seen as a fun, competitive shooter with tense battles. But it lacked much in the way of content, its AI was criticized, and its use of microtransactions was derided by many.

Ubisoft went out of its way to support the game after launch. It fixed many of the bugs, added new content, including maps and players, and many began to positively reconsider its monetization methods in comparison to other games like it.

7 Star Wars Battlefront 2

When Star Wars Battlefront 2 first launched, it was mired in controversy thanks to its egregious use of microtransactions, and a less-than-ideal progression system. Beneath those issues, the game was well received, with much praise going to its inclusion of a campaign.

The controversy and complaints won out though, so developer DICE went out of its way to course correct. It cut back on the microtransactions, tweaked the progression system, and patched the game's bugs and glitches. The game never fully recovered its audience and fanbase, but it did make a comeback.

6 Final Fantasy 14

Final Fantasy 14 launched to little attention or acclaim. As an MMORPG, the developer was dependent on continued support from fans. So, rather than admit defeat, it went back and assigned a new team to revamp the game.

With the 2.0 update, titled A Real Reborn, a new engine was utilized, the infrastructure of the online components improved, and the story was enhanced. The original version of Final Fantasy 14 is now no longer available. This revamped version was met with better reviews, and its audience steadily grew in the proceeding years.

5 Destiny

Destiny and its sequel are among the most renowned multiplayer games today. In it, you and your friends can take to science fiction battlefields in first-person perspective and continue the ongoing war. However, when Destiny first launched, it was not met with the acclaim and attention it now has.

Much of Destiny’s initial reception was mixed, with attention focused on poor voice acting, a weak story, and a limited amount of content. After launch, Bungie addressed these complaints by adding more story content, recasting one of the lead actors, and continued to support the game and its players for years. Its popularity grew, as did its critical acclaim.

4 Fortnite

Fortnite wasn’t always what it is today. When Fortnite first came out, it was considered by many to be another, generic, multiplayer shooter. Fortnite: Save The World was Epic Games’ attempt at a game as a service, and it launched in early access to middling attention and acclaim.

It wasn’t until the battle royale mode was released, and the game shifted to a free-to-play model that Fortnite really started to resemble what it is today. The inclusion of a battle royale reinvigorated the game, and there have been many additions to it, including skins, concerts, events, and more.

3 Grand Theft Auto Online

Grand Theft Auto Online, launched as an add-on to Grand Theft Auto 5 was not the big hit its base game was. It came out to a mixed reception, with many criticizing its technical issues, its menus and lobbies, and its lack of content.

Since then, the game has seen many expansions, tweaks, and patches. Alongside later updates of the base game, the online experience received changes and updates too. It has since grown to become one of the most successful and popular video games ever made, primarily due to the endless entertainment and possibilities the online portion of the game provides.

2 Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 may have been one of the most highly anticipated games ever made. It was a graphical powerhouse, set in a futuristic, cyberpunk world. It was an open-world, role-playing game from the makers of one of the greatest open-world, role-playing games ever, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Sadly, upon launch, the game was mired in controversy because, for some, it simply didn’t work. For others, it was a technical mess. Filled with bugs and glitches, Cyberpunk 2077 was seen as a major disappointment that should not have launched as early as it did. CD Projekt Red received a lot of flak for it, and went on to patch the game, add new content, expand it with DLC and make Cyberpunk 2077 the game almost everyone wanted it to be.

1 No Man’s Sky

When you tell players that your game is going to have so many features, so many possibilities, and you continue to build up the hype for it, certain expectations are put in place. When you then don’t have those features and possibilities in the game when it launches, players rightfully get a little angry and upset.

No Man’s Sky did just that. It promised a lot, with trailers and developers hyping up the potential for players prior to launch. Only, it launched in a bare-bones fashion, lacking a lot of what was promised. Over time, the developers added to and expanded on the game, eventually delivering on what was promised. It then relaunched, to greater acclaim, and its popularity and attention grew too.
